Moto products from 2013 and 2014 will get Lollipop soon

13 January, 2015

Luciano Carvalho, a Motorola software engineer announced today that an Android 5.0 update will be seeding to a lot of Moto devices "really soon". This hopefully refers to some time in the next week or two, but understandably no date has been fixed.

Moto products from 2013 and 2014 will get Lollipop soon

The Lollipop OTA has been a long-standing promise to various near-stock Android Motorola users. And while the update may appear as simple as grabbing the source code and adding a thin software layer on top, the building and testing process in much more complex and requires thorough and time-consuming debugging. Carvalho had this to say about the difficulties, surrounding Lollipop and the consequent delay in seeding:

Updates of this nature take time. It's no secret that when 5.0 launched it still had bugs. And, when we update our products, we end up finding more bugs that need to be fixed. There are a lot of reasons for what that happen, but, basically, each phone has a unique set of components and a way they interact. When Google creates a new release, they don't validate it for all the possible combinations there are, and they won't fix anything that's not reproducible on a Nexus device, that's our job.

Apparently the statement on Google+ was prompted by the news that a select pool of Lollipop-eligible devices in certain areas are already receiving an Android 5.0.2 OTA. This, as confirmed by Luciano is a soak test, which, provided everything goes smooth will transform into a mass release. If you are wondering whether or not Android Lollipop will grace your Motorola device, below you will find a list of known eligible devices.

An important side note for first get device users is that prior to the update they should make sure that they are equipped with the latest version of Motorola Update Services from the Play Store. Hiccups are also expected with the updater so if anything goes wrong check back after a day or two for a resolution and don't get discouraged as Motorola has promised that there will be enough sugary goodness to go around.
