New US FCC proposal to close loopholes and prohibit caller ID spoofing for text and calls

Enrique, 09 July 2019

On Monday, the FCC released a new proposal that would finally close a loophole that keeps authorities from pursuing scammers that target US callers. As we all know, Robocalling and call spoofing has increasingly become a huge issue. Scammers will even spoof the number of a trusted organization in order to steal from unsuspecting victims.

The Truth in Caller ID Act prohibits anyone from transmitting misleading or inaccurate caller ID information (“spoofing”) with the intent to defraud, cause harm, or wrongly obtain anything of value.

The FCC has been working hard to battle the countless number of illegal robocalls and malicious caller ID fraud. The new Act would allow the US to enforce accountability unto those offenders whether or not they reside within the United States.

Last year, the FCC enforced carriers to implement the SHAKEN/STIR standards for all wireless carriers to verify the authenticity of incoming calls. In fact, on July 11, there’s a Robocall Summit for the industry to present its progress as it approaches the enforcement deadline towards the end of the year.

You can check out the FCC's initiatives site where it outlines all the efforts it is taking in order to combat all robocalls, spoof calls, spoof messages, and combat phishing schemes.

Long overdue. Thank God the US government does something right for once.
