We're at the IFA grounds and waiting for today's slew of events, but someone got up close and personal with the Huawei Mate S (which flip-flopped between that name and Mate 7S during its numerous leaks).

The Huawei Mate S is a follow-up to the Mate 7 with an all-metal body and a 5.7" screen snuggled behind 2.5D glass (that is glass with smooth, chamfered and possibly curved sides). The LCD screen will have 1080p resolution and is said to feature Force Touch-like functionality.

The fingerprint sensor on the back was the focus of Huawei's teaser campaign, with the tagline "5 powerful functions will fit in 1 square cm." What the five functions are is a guessing game for now, but secure locking and mobile payments are practically a given.

Another look at the Mate S

The Mate S will run Android 5.1 Lollipop with EMUI 3.1 on top of a Kirin 935 chipset (same chipset as the Honor 7) with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of built-in storage, plus up to 128GB more from a microSD card. There will be two more card slots – two nanoSIMs – and Cat. 6 LTE connectivity.

Once again, this is the unofficial info we have beforehand, Huawei's press conference starts at 13:00 GMT. We'll post a link to the livestream so you can watch the Huawei Mate S announcement too.

The back and sides of the phone looks a bit similar to the IPhone 6 Plus. It is quite obvious that Huawei took inspiration from the 6 Plus in designing this new phone of theirs. The design of the IPhone still appeals to me a lot more though, but its ...
