Steam finally enters China officially

Ro, 09 February 2021

Up until now, the world's largest gaming market has not benefited from Steam's huge PC game library. However, Steam's entry into the Chinese market isn't as great as you'd think. Due to strict Chinese policies, most of the games won't be available to Chinese players.

Steam enters the Chinese PC gaming market

In fact, the available Steam library outside of China contains about 48,000 titles while the one in the country has merely 41 games. Even those 41 games would not have reached China if it wasn't for the local publisher Perfect World. It's important to note that Valve has been present on the Chinese market with an adapted version of CS:GO and Dota 2 but with its own clients but this is the first time the company is launching the official Steam client in the country.

Chinese laws restrict games involving blood, corpses and gambling in order to protect young gamers and battle gaming addiction in the country. As a result, each title has to be given the green light by the government before reaching the market.

Based on the chatter on zhihu, the chinese gamers are doubtful. I think they will stick to the international server for now. The national one looks pathetic.

actually, everyone there just use the copy-cat looked alike locals for everything that's banned, from software like google, browser, messenger to every single things like food, soaps, and even glassware

I am happy they ban gambling in China. Chinese gamblers will holiday in my country with their cash. I love it. This was before the pandemic though.
