Not too surprising. The S4 was superior in styling where the S5 looked similar but not as good. You need to change more than the side edge of a device. I would have hoped that they learned that from Apple a couple years ago.

Thankfully, we should expect a different looking S6 around the corner for just that reason.

To reduce their stock they introduced S5 plus in some markets so that the sales improve. It has S805 with full hd display meaning tht this will be a beast in itself since it will hafto power less pixels. D 16 mp isocell camera is very good. I wished they changed the materials for d plus version. But I would buy this phone if it launched in india

Mike, 24 Nov 2014I used to be a massive fan of Samsung but its beyond a joke... moreWhen you're right there ain't much left to say

A perfect exmaple of this is the Samsung Galaxt Alpha
which was aimed "shoot & scores" at the iPhone market
            (and Magneto) in using metal

The Alpha specs show Samsung could make an iPhone better than Apple, but in doing so Samsung dropped memory expansion from a flagship phone ?

Apple dropped the 32Gb iPhone6 meaning the Alpha ONLY competed with the 16Gb iPhone (if you needed 64Gb stay with Apple)

To correctthis and compet with ALL iPhones Samsung then released 2 Alpha clones (lesser specs as NOT to comepete with the Alpha) BOTH had memory expansion

            So in 2015 a reversal?
The Alpha 2 will GAIN memory expansion, the clones if reained to lose it

Phones will be kept for longer( case & screen protector) due to the high end specs,

Unless there is a need to upgrade it makes little sense to spend more getting the S5 if your S3 works and the S5 features you don't need

Samsung must maintain a strict portfolio, either save up to get the features, as now it seem you can get a Samsung phone no matter what the budget and most of those have near identical features specs

The S S4 sales comparison is skewed as the S4 was a record selling phone and just because the S5 has better feature does not mean it will sell more.

Sarmis, 24 Nov 2014I have both s4 and s5. I preffer s4!I've had an GT-I9515 (S4 Black Edition) which I really wanted at that time. Nothing but trouble with that device. It kept shutting down for no reason. Went for repair several times until I got so fed-up and threatened to sue the store. Eventually they replaced it for an GT-i9505 (yeah, the ugly slippery one) which I sold 2nd hand immediately. Got another S4 GT-i9505 from a friend whom wanted an S5. AGAIN nothing but trouble. It rebooted when I installed certain apps. I never figured out what app or what exactly caused the reboots. Rooted the damn thing, removed bloatware, tweaked to no avail. In the end I reflashed it to stock again and then it began to work solid. By then I also had a buyer for it and let go of that damn Gt-i9505 as well.

Bought an S5. And apart from the ugly UI (where's the soft shadow under those icons, Samsung?... and where is that lovely semi-transparent classic calendar widget that showed next appointments?). I love it. Rock Steady so far. Been throwing apps on and off of it. Just keeps on going. Finally! I loved the stability o/t 4.1.2 S3 (I9300) that I once owned and this S5 (4.4.2) seems on par (for now).

The camera is quite good (I'm spoiled coming from a Nokia 808PV). It's amazingly fast.

It can record calls without rooting/hacking AND at better quality than S4 :-)
BTW, the S4 can also record calls without rooting. You just need an app.

The only drawback so far. The speaker is IMHO too quiet. My Nokia 808PV is ridiculously loud (which is really needed for satnav-use) or when the phone sits in a backpack (in a leather pouch orso) or when you're hard of hearing like me :-)

But all in all I prefer the S5 over the S4 and S3 (that I previously had).

BTW. That S5 has 2GB more free storage (about 11,3GB) compared to the S4 (about 9,3GB) from its 16GB internal drive.

Samsung and others must understand that the people wants phones not bricks of over 5 inches.

We need up to 5 inch, more than 2 GB Ram, Amoled and done.
They can keep a such phone more than 2 years on market. Why would I need another phone if all the above features are fulfilled? :)

Increasing consumer confidence in the chinese brands will prove disastrous for samsung/sony etc. They don't have the brand power of apple among rich people.

                              Some comparissons (24/11/2014):

                              S3 Neo 16GB: 225 euro
                              S4 16GB Black Edition (GT-I9515): 349 euro
                              S5 16GB: 599 euro -100 euro cashback = 499 euro

You can even find the S5 subsidized for 399 euro which is IMHO a very good deal.

This is the true reason why the S5 doesn't sell. Samsung thinks they can also charge more for their devices. The S5 launched way more expensive then the launch price o/t S4. In fact the S4 can be bought in Europe for a little over 350 euros while the S3 Neo sells for about 250 euro (or less) and the S5 for a whopping 599 euro. With those prices the S4 is even today the best value for money. Plus recession is everywhere. It's obvious that even in western world (EU + US) the bad economy is demanding its toll.

anyway WSJ is biased towards Apple being an American company. Ok say they didn't 10 million in the first day but then no other phone has. Personally S5 is awesome and I love it.

The S3 doesn't lag. Dissable the bloat and it flies. And even with the bloat it's not a slow goat either.

"...near high end performance like S4."
                                        No shit, Sherlock!

"...and the S5 display looked 2 sizes too small and it looked just terrible in every visual way."
Yet everybody and dog oozes over that same display and call it the "best Amoled display to date!"
The bezels are no worse than the S4's. See: http://www.uniquemobiles.com.au/blog/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/SGS5-23.jpg

                                        "...S4 just was too good.."
Except for the bloody random restarts and the shoddy quality control.

The S5 is rock steady as far as stability goes. Looks much better than the original S4 (GT-i9505) and is way faster. I admit that the S4 black edition (GT-i9515) looks really good indeed.

"thats the true technical level of the average sammy user"
No the S5 is a true update. Much faster CPU/GPU, more RAM, better screen, improved camera (and YES that camera is REALLY BETTER) and improved battery, coupled with better looks (compared to GT-i9505).

It's the non-techies whom can't see the improvements and keep dwelling upon these ridiculous QHD screens that eat GPU-performance and destroy battery-endurance.

Give me an S5 over an LG G3 any day. IF LG made a FHD G3 (slightly more affordable) then they would have gotten a winner both in looks, power and performance but alas.

Fact is all these manufacturers are dumbasses. They all make ridiculous decisions and hope to get rich quick.

Good advice to Samsung: 1) LESS devices. 2) give the devices MORE time to mature. 3) Stop creating incremental variants of devices. (as someone pointed out: No S5 plus, no S5 LTE, no S5 Neo... just the one S5 AND stick with it and perform software optimizations instead)
