It seems like Google is really serious about this project they are doing great and developers are also happy with the announced spiral 2 because it has more development space for all change's

Kind of dumb expecting people to buy it and wait for the may or may not be good enough future upgrade.

And the external connections are so much less efficient.

I wonder why anyone from PC maker not trying to do this for a laptop and desktops? more than mobile it is PC world which is so much more sensible for this project (relatively).

With mobile people get bored with the looks - not the case with PC (relatively) and most important one needs constant upgrades with PC more than anything.

I think the Project ARA will make Android smartphones beat Windows PCs in about twenty years.

of course nothing & those are just your thoughts & no more,
well unless you are a part of the project!

i still believe some company will buy this project & put a stop to it, & fast.
i mean who would buy high-end junk tech when he doesn't need it?unless it's been put into a whole phone & you "have to" have it & pay for it along with other parts.
                        here comes the modular...
so if we could chose the parts by ourselves & not been told what to buy like right now, the game would change & many companies would get in trouble FAST.
i'm waiting Google LET THE WAR COMMENCE ,

Anonymous, 15 Dec 2014Terrible speaker on the Note 4? are you from this planet? y... moreI think many people are missing the point of this project. It is not so much to help you build your own flagship phone, but to drive innovation in this space. With the modular approach, you can combine a phone with a blood testing unit or a custom scanner or may be a separate long lasting flash light (for villages in Asia/africa?) or any other useful module.

This way you do not have to design a full fledged custom handheld device for these purposes which are very expensive. Think big and different. It has enormous potential to spur useful innovation.

Anonymous, 15 Dec 2014Terrible speaker on the Note 4? are you from this planet? y... moreIf there is an ARA Marketplace then there will be vendors building models that range from crappy to flagship level. It will be up to the end consumer to decide EXACTLY what he wants... In theory though, I cant say that ARA will have a flagship... As no two phones will be alike, if you catch my drift

As for software optimization, i think they'll fin a way to fix this. And let's not forget there won't be any bloatware, so i wouldn't be surprised if it's actually more optimized than a regular Flagship with tons of crap first from the manufacturer and then from the carrier

And yet, Note's speaker is extremely crappy. Loud, yes, but unbearable.

It's not like "big names" can't make their phones perfect enough so you don't miss/aren't unsatissfied with anything. They just don't want to (Or are insane). So they better reconsider their ridiculous conception or everyone who seeks a high tech device first and not a fashion device will build their own phone via ARA

I am surprised to see the trolls here. This is a new idea, not been done before but regardless of what you are looking for in a phone, it can be found in this device's components.

Lets break it down a little.

The replacement screen for a Samsung S4 is about 120 euro (that includes the frame). Now add on the main PCB (minus components obviously), this will probably see the price of the Ara screen and main frame of the phone placed around 140 - 160 euro for 1080p res.

Based on the break down costs to produce an iPhone (without profit) things like CPU's cost about 50 euro a pop. Call it 80 euro with a mark-up plus battery for 40 euro on the reasonable side and were looking at a price tag of 280 euro entry level (they can throw ina cheap basic camera to start with.

Now start adding things like SD card slots, high performance camera, better speaker, another battery, more RAM and your price starts to jump, maybe you have the option of 720, 1080 or even 1440 res screens as the base device. The options are all there.

over time you start to buy more bits, for the phone and you swap them around based on your plans. load the phone with 3 batteries if your going out for a long day using the phone for some navigation, swap out to a different config for just a night out, 2 batteries and really good camera module for taking pics of your mate laying on the floor drunk. multiple mic's and speakers if you are doing speaker phone calls for a few hours so you can here the other person and they acan here everyone in the room with you. The options are many (I won't say endless).

Give it a chance to find its place in the market before you say its crap or it will fail. It has the potential to make the big names like sam and sony be a little more carful with how they spec their devices as people will be in a position to by exactly what they want and im sure it will cost less than a note 4.

I'm thinking this will really shake the dust of the industry.
