Motorola Nexus 6 almost had a fingerprint sensor

27 January, 2015
The dimple that hosts the Motorola logo on the back of the phone could have been a fingerprint scanner.

Next technology will be hand sensor where your phone would recognize you when you just hold your phone.

You’re far more likely to be robbed by a mugger than you are to have a beautiful woman lift your fingerprints of a martini glass. Sadly.
Touch ID may not be infallible, but it’s a whole lot better than a four-digit security code.

Who's even bothered which sensor is bad? The main story here is that Apple stole the manufacturer basically giving android a big kick in the teeth as nexus 6 is the king of Android. Still who needs a fingerprint sensor as it's been proven that fingerprint security isn't that good. Besides the nexus 6 price is high enough already. Let iPhone users keep getting their thrills from silly insignificant things.

Oh come on guys! You heard it straight from the phone maker's mouth (former employe to be exact), in other words, from the likes of people that have had the opportunity to make real lab tests and compare all of them - Authentec's/iPhone's fingerprint sensor is the best on the market and you are still insisting that Huawei's is better?!? Just swallow your pride and go on. Apple simply won that front in the phone makers features-battle and that's the end of the story!...

I don't agree with this. Authentec maybe the hotshot but there are also others like FPC which is used in mate7 and Goodix used in mx4 pro. And mate7 is claimed to be the fastest and most convenient to use (and many reviews does show that). Mayb Motorola should've used any of these.

Because of no fingerprint I didn't buy this phone and bought Galaxy Note 4. Also tried Huawei Mate 7 whose fingerprint is much better.

I think fingerprint scanners are a mixed blessing. Yes, they are super convenient, but they are actually not that secure. (Though clearly better than not using any unlock code at all.)

People don't realize, I think, that it has been demonstated with the iPhone to be relatively easy to lift fingerprints off of surfaces, even off of the iPhone itself and use them to unlock the device. And of course, our phone are covered with our fingerprints. This can be done with amature household items (tape, etc.)

In addition, at least in the U.S., the Supreme Court has rule that fingerprints are not like passwords and are not afforded fifth amendment protections. You can't be forced to divulge knowledge in your head to incriminate yourself (i.e. a password), but the Supreme Court said fingerprints are external information that we leave everywhere and not protected in the same way. So you can be forced to unlock your phone with your fingerprint.

The problem with this, is that it can also lull people into complacency believing that their iPhones are more secure than they really are. So you may be better off on a Nexus device without a fingerprint sensor, where you either know that you are vulnerable with no unlock code and take other precautions about what you do with your phone. Or you realize you need to make a good password to unlock your phone.
