As someone who bought into the hype about webOS I sincerely hope this isn't true. The sad truth is that webOS looks nice but the future roadmap is pretty bleak, whereas S60 might not be so hot now, but it's future looks good (assuming it doesn't come too late).
Being able to code a single application that runs on s40, s60 & Maemo using Qt? Heck Yeah.

Finally! The Palm Web OS and the Web OS user interface are far more superior to any symbian phone ever made. This is the only way nokia can compete with Apple and RIM. Buy technology and creative people. As far as I'm concerned, nokia lost it's creativity in 2001. Since then they keep releasing the same phone, just with different form factor. Nokia if you do this, you will become nr.1 in creativity again. Good luck!

Most of the Palm management agree to be absorbed by their buyer, and Nokia seems to be the best bidder here.

If ever that comes true, I'd like to see how Nokia will put Palm features on its E-series. :D While Maemo on the high-end phones or Nseries. More to come with Symbian Foundation OS!

Good idea Nokia, so long as they take the best that Palm does and puts it into their own phones in a kind of partnership like Sony Ericsson.

Nokia, as a world leading cellphone manufacturing had been dropin it's market share lately. Closing in 2nd is Samsung, as we see dat its ellegance in design n UI is much better than Nokia... But with d acquisition.. Bye everybody. Nokia will be way ahead again.

The only reason the Pre exists is that venture capitalists invested money in Palm in the hope that a company like Nokia or Motorola would buy them out...

...without a buy-out Palm will be dead in a year or two,

btw why are we still waiting for the GSM version of the Pre?

Meanwhile Palm can't make the Pre pretend to be an iPod in order to sync with iTunes:-

                              http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090922/usb-if-slaps-palm/

Maybe they are leaving the development of their own sync software to a buyer of the company.

After playing around with the Palm Pre a number of times, this is really interesting news indeed. I'm not a big fan of the Palm but I must say that the new WebOS on the Pre is very smooth and easy to use...the accelerometer is very quick just as an example. If Nokia buys Palm it'll be a win for both companies and of course the consumer.

This'd be a silly move for Nokia. They have no need for a new phone OS -- they have the upcoming Symbian Foundation OS (next 1-2 years it'll be out in the form of Symbian^3 and Symbian^4) and now they have Maemo 5 which is the most advanced smartphone OS on the market. Maemo 5 has a full-blown Linux OS. Android only has a Linux kernel and virtualization stacked on top of the kernel.

WebOS would simply further dilute Nokia. Don't see this happening.

Source of the false rumour that Nokia is going to buy Palm is a press release issued Tuesday in Finland, home of Nokia, about Nokia's purchase of Plum Ventures, Inc. That's Plum, P-L-U-M, not Palm! Of course if you are a non-English speaking Finn Palm and Plum are just two very similar, random sets of characters. That and previous Nokia/Palm rumor started the rumor anew in Finland. It jumped the big pond to The US, and back again to Europe, without the clarifying press release. Palm stock shot up when the rumor began circulating widely and still hovers above $17.00 a share. Wouldn't want to hold a lot of Palm Stock when this hits the wires.
