The OS may be free-to-use, but the Technical Steering Group composed of Samsung and Intel controls which code gets implemented into the OS. That means they get to control the architecture of the OS, something Samsung can't do with Android.
The open-source community can submit code as a recommendation to improve a certain part of the OS, but ultimately, it is up to Samsung and Intel if they want to implement that recommended code or code their own version.
The open-source nature of Tizen is only its free-to-use nature and its open source-code.
The SDK is also under a Samsung license.

Anonymous, 22 May 2015Of course. Google is now competing with Samsung's Tizen OS,... moreI enjoyed BADA O/S and although limited for apps the Samsung Wave was a quality smartphone with metal body,good battery ,720p video recording ,shutter button and top of the range screen.
I am all for Tizen or anything new ,,these O/S will not be around for ever ad even todays smartphone is boring. The market has stagnated and I am getting bored( so are many others too).

Of course. Google is now competing with Samsung's Tizen OS, which will be integral in Samsung's IoT future.
The Tizen-powered Samsung Z1 already sold 500,000+ units in India alone and became the best-selling smartphone model in Bangladesh for Q1 2015.
So far, Tizen has only been released in those 2 countries, but a global Tizen phone should be released later this year or early next year.

It was the very first (desktop) OS for ARM-devices (originally ARM2 8MHz). I'm sure quite a few Raspberry Pi owners have come across it. Needles to say that current RISC OS implementation is nothing like that OS from the early nineties. The current ROM-image is nowadays about 2,5MB for the core RISC OS ROM for a RPI.

You all seemed to forget tha... morePlaystation 2 was a more dedicated device, I can say without investigating that the Playstation had a graphics engine, hardware developed, that permits to the console to display graphics in a more efficient way instead of CPU RAM usage. That thing (the engine) is not exactly what all the smartphones have, not to mention that they are now more general purpose oriented (not only calls and messaging but also WEB navigation, music, games, etc)

Android is a horrible OS. They should start something from scratch that is specifically tailored towards low power, simple devices.
You dont't need a webcam on your toaster or wifi on your toilet to tell you that you forgot to flush.
Really wish more phone companies would avoid google products as they are flat out horrible. They should of stuck to theyr search engine and mailing system.

For those blabbering about how Android is too big to work in 32mb of ram, this will not be Android, it will be Brillo.
Android normally includes GAPPs (calendar, email, play store, browser), which an IoT device wouldn't need.
Android normally includes the Android Framework (phone dialer, activity managers, resource managers), IoT devices don't need these either.
Even many of the android libraries wouldn't be necessary (eg. openGL framework, sqllite, webkit).
Take away all that, the OS that we call Android gets much smaller.

That android version will be very very good if it only uses 32mb of the smartphone's 3gb ram.

Talking about 32MB of RAM..
You all seemed to forget that Playstation 2 console had only 32MB RAM, yet it delivers top notch quality games..
Smartphone todays have gigabytes of RAM but, well, you can see yourself how 'good' smartphone games, eh?

The iPhone 6 is a good phone, but a good midrange phone (it is still quite limited)..

My first full fledged PC had 8MB of RAM a 128MB HDD and that bad boy could run games, work stuff and play crappy video and music. So a IoT micro PC running on 32MB is nothing to be impressed by. You can do a bunch of stuff with 32MB specially for the type of things IoT is intended to do.

I am going to take a wild guess that you are the same BobbyBuster on PA...
If so, I shouldn't even bother answering, but I will for the sake of other readers....
This new OS will not be destined for Mobile phones, it is for appliances and other objects that may become more useful by being connected to the internet or to each others...
Regarding to Android for smartphones, it will keep getting better and smarter, faster than what Apple does...
Indeed it needs more RAM and processing power to do actual smart things, instead of having lower specs like the iPhone for doing only feature-phone task...
I love driving my car using waze and having a couple of floating apps at the same time one for whatsapp and one for music so I can just take a glance and see everything without having to interact with my phone...
I also love having many apps running and many browser tabs loaded without having to go back and reload every time because my phone indeed has 2 GB of RAM instead of the puny 1 GB that the iPhone offer... It is simply not enough
