The $160 price is a joke in relative to its price in other countries. I wasn't talking about absolute price per se.

It's very cheap for Brazil, considering our target price for this category. Moto G costs 800 reais (US$ 256), but Asus is now saying they'll sell Zenfone 5 for the same price tag for a day. It's not just taxes, I mean, the problem is all about the Brazilian way of doing business with to many people selling and reselling till the final consumer. Xiaomi says they will only sell their products through the website, so is the only way to keep it competitive.

But it does make me wonder, if Xiaomi start manufacturing there, at least the import taxes would not exist.

I'm pretty sure it will sell well here in Colombia. If the price is lower than Moto G's or Huawei phones' wich are the best selling phones here.

Its brazil... Import taxes are too high. Every gadgets there are top costly.. Samsung mobile costs twice the normal rate there... Likewise all the mobiles... So $160 for redmi 2 must be cheap for them..

                (1) Redmi 2 for $160 is a joke. One could get a 2nd Gen Moto G or the upcoming Lenovo K3 Note for the same price. (2) The Redmi 1S unveiled in India last year is still on 4.3 Jelly Bean, and hasn't seen the 4.4 KitKat update yet. (3) MIUI is a RAM sucker. Xiaomi's phones run smooth initially, but as the time passes they lag so much it's very annoying.
