OnePlus 2 gets a teardown treatment, reveals innards

31 July, 2015
OnePlus 2 is yet to make its way to consumers' hands, but reviewers over at it168.com have grabbed a hold of one, and have given it their customary tear down treatment.

Translations as follows:

Pic 1: Large layer of graphite coating for heat dissipation (Wording in black)
Notes: The upper half of the cover in contact with the chip-set is coated with a large layer of graphite to dissipate heat. This is also one of the standard techniques that many flagship phones employ. Internally, the OnePlus 2 uses the common 3 tier layout (Translator notes: for assembly) and utilises black PCB circuit boards.

Pic 2:
Notes: (Internally,) OnePlus 2's metallic frame is made out of a single block of magnesium-aluminium alloy, and the position of the cut outs (translator explanation: for the various functional holes, e.g. button holes, charging slot hole, SIM card holder, etc) are carefully selected to maintain alloy integrity - allowing for a phone that is durable under usage.

Pic 3:
Notes: Image-wise, the OnePlus 2 uses the OV13860 sensor for the main camera and the OV5648 sensor for the front facing camera. The main sensor uses one of the biggest optic sensors available for 13 Megapixel cameras, which, in our opinion, is a significant upgrade in image quality over the previous generation.

Pic 4:
Notes: According to our tear down, we can see that the OnePlus 2 has kept away from unique designs that require complicated manufacturing techniques that may lengthen the production process, but have rather settled for a standard design that can be built on tried and tested manufacturing processes. This allows them to avoid production bottlenecks while scaling up production.

Also, during the OnePlus 2 announcement, much has been reiterated that 500 days have elapsed since the original OnePlus announcement, which is uncommon to hear of in the mobile industry nowadays. During this period, the OnePlus team has not only been refining the handset for its second generation, but they have been deliberately building up anticipation for the next generation. The team's current business strategy involves waiting for chip-set, pricing, and supply stability before launching a new product, so as to build a phone that is not just competitive in price, but one where consumer demand could be easily met due to the wide-spread availability of the components for production.

From this revelation, it seems like unlike other new product launches that are dependent on an initially unstable supply of components or difficult manufacturing processes, the launch and availability of the OnePlus 2 will remain unaffected by such issues. The OnePlus 2 is expected to be available shortly, which will certainly help the OnePlus team in achieving a massive improvement in sales volume.

It's true that the old said you get what you paid for. Good luck to buyers with their shitty customer service.
