Motorola shut down their Silicon Valley office last week which makes me skeptical. It would be pretty silly to move the thing to Beijing.

I'm not sure what this article is implying... Google and Motorola are two separate companies. ATAP became part of X when Google sold Motorola. Are they now entering into some sort of partnership for further development of Ara?

lenovo owns moto mobile now. so ara will be go to lenovo in fact.
looking at the demo pics and early videos, i think r&d team went to a wrong direction. too radical design which dramaticlly increase the bulk and weight of the product.
instead, they should still incorp the traditional design PCB with plugs and connectors, but make PCB, casing, plugs, connectors standard for better swappabilities.
just similar to the idea of ATX, mATX, iATX... and mini, mid, full tower case. you get the idea. in fact, i've done simple designs and submit year ago when it started.
