WhatsApp content backup to Google Drive finally becomes official

07 October, 2015
A new feature of WhatsApp that lets you back up all your content from the messaging app to Google Drive has been in testing for many months now. It worked for some people on certain versions of WhatsApp back in April, for example, but not everyone got this ability enabled. Now it turns out that those who did may have either used beta versions of the messenger, or were simply lucky to be randomly selected to test this feature.

Too late for the update. My WhatsApp backup unexpectally corrupted and my chat history completely lost. Then the Google Drive backup update released. Quite sad. Thumbs down!

Anonymous, 07 Oct 2015So wait, does that mean that we no longer need to look for ... moreYep. It works perfectly in that way. One thing to be mentioned that you have to be logged in to that particular google drive acc when you are re-installing wa. Also, if you choose not to restore your chat and media history while reinstalling wa, it won't give you any option to do it later. Hope that helps.

Well it seems like I was lucky to use this feature more than month I also did factory data reset to my phone and when I reinstalled WhatsApp all my chat including media (pic and videos )were restored :)

Mannn? Seriously? You don't have to wait & they are not gonno pick anybody "randomly" (WTH). Just download the apk & install it! It works, I'm using it right now! This is the link: https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/whatsapp-inc/whatsapp/whatsapp-2-12-303-android-apk-download/

Anonymous, 07 Oct 2015So wait, does that mean that we no longer need to look for ... moreI believe you'd be able to sync it with your Google Account and so then it'll ask you, if you want to download those files to your device, or want to have them backed-up in the cloud.
PS: I'm sure you'd have all files on your phone just like you do now, but it'd be backed-up to make sure you don't lose anything in case of...anything.

So wait, does that mean that we no longer need to look for "WhatsApp" folder in file manager and move the folder to the new device when we switch to a new device? And just need to sign in to Google Drive, on the new device and everything will be intact?

So it takes them months to implement one single feature and the service is paid. Other backup options till 2017? Ugh

                                  This is getting ridiculous
