Teardown of Blackberry Priv shows screen easily replaceable

30 November, 2015
Youtuber JerryRigEverything has put out a new video. You’ve probably heard of him as he was recently all over the smartphone blogs for the Nexus 6Ps bend test videos.

There's one "small" catch. A new replacement screen will rip you a new one. If anyone knows where I can get a digitiser for less than 200 Eur, please let me know...

Anonymous, 02 Dec 2015there is no excuse for using glueIf reduced to a statement like "There are no excuse for using glue in a way so a device can not be opened without damaging it", then I certainly agree for almost any device.

But in general there are constructions where glue are the least bad solution.

Yuri84, 01 Dec 2015I hate this process - heat up the screen to fix it in place... moreSure screws are easier than glue for repair, BUT there are some pros of glue too.

Glue (at least some types) add some elasticity to the whole construction, and also increases the contact area. and as phablets and phones are getting thinner and thinner, some measure of elasticity reduces the risk of breaking the device. And screws would need to be very short, and thus not with a good grip, (unless it is as nuts and bolts)

I hate this process - heat up the screen to fix it in place with glue. Gone are the good old days of fixing stuff in place with screws, sadly.

Anonymous, 01 Dec 2015I don't what the definition of easy is to you guys...Great to see that not all brand copies the build in obsolescence and use-and-throw-away that aPple are using. Would love to see the same decency as Blackberry here shows from other brands.

As many mentions "easily" is perhaps pushing it, but compared to almost all new phablets out there this IS quite a lot easier to repair.

                So: Good job Blackberry!
Yet another plus in favour of the Priv - I'm really considering buying it, but I'm holding my horses a bit to see if we get a keyboard layout adapted with Danish/Norwegian letters somehow. But most likely I will buy it late this month.

wow nice that's awesome that the glue is just around the outside of the screen. should be simple to fix anything on this phone, unlike the latest galaxy series and the iphone 6

It might be easy for you if you do this for living but i thought this is EASY like "any person could do it without any problems easy".

I doubt it will get high repairability score from iFixit (7 out of 10 at best); the LCD and digitizer are fused and the use of adhesive will always be negative point, moreover, as a slider phone, the flex/ribbon cable should be easy to replace.
