All Symbian services ceased in 2014, after the platform got discontinued in 2012. Nokia didn't switch to Symbian, it "switched" to Windows (got bought by Microsoft). I have no idea what you're talking about.

AnonD-51738, 09 Dec 2015The list of dead and almost dead mobile OS: 1- Firefox O... moreIt wasnt Elop that killed MeeGo/Maemo. The deceision to not invest in Maemo/MeeGo, and keep bleeding money in to the symbian project, that decision came before Elop.

It was really Symbian that killed Maemo/MeeGo.

Sure, Elop could have changed direction.
But too many people inside Nokia had their employement tied to the existence of Symbian. So the probably kept fooling him, like they probably fooled the board before he came there, that Symbian, could keep up with other OSes.

Symbian was an OK os, for a few years.
It took Android several of years to catch up in terms of functionality. And still Android does not support having the alarm set, while the phone is off (WP doesnt support that either, and I dont think iOS does either).
But it had a built in resolution limit, so they would have to build a layer on top of symbian.
The browser, although it supported full websites, and had some flash support, kept on closing all the time.
Although it was faster than Android on slower CPUs, it wasnt smooth.
It did have full multitasking, but that is mostly a thing you need, when the API library isnt good enough to support all kind of background processes you might need. You really dont need the full app running in the background, when you only need a few processes. That will strain the CPU and occupy more ram.
The touch version of Symbian S60, was really bad. Double clicking mixed with single clicks. And not smooth on any hardware. And then the resolution limit became clear, when screens started growing.
And apps designed for non touch S60 didnt work either.
So really, Nokia should have started over back then, and never released the touch version of S60. By that time, the OS was already lagging behind, in terms of web performance fluidity, and apps.
Sure, there was still a year to the N900, but Nokia already had maemo on a few products. Had they seen the potential back then... It was a pretty small team within Nokia, that was behind the N900 project. They probably had to fight hard, to be able to release the device. And they had to keep saying that it wasnt the future direction of Nokia. Since Nokia still was thinking Symbian was the future.
If the Maemo teem had gotten the resources Symbian got, things would have looked a lot different. Even the N9 was developed by a pretty small team. Even though Nokia had made plans, to use QT, to make MeeGo and Symbian apps compatible.

Elop might have been sent to Nokia as a trojan horse.
But if he was, it was Nokias own bad deceision, before his arrival that paved the way for the MS buyout.

Firefox browser itself is dead. Cluttered slower always showing script message errors. Mozilla foundations, firefox, thunderbird, OS all have become cluttered and unusable. I have moved away from Mozilla products beginning of 2015 itself.

It was a disastrous approach to develop Firefox OS in the very beginning imo!

It has to be happened one day... but wasnt expect this quick... I think no one else could survive in the era of Android and IOS...

As for it becoming dead, it comes as no surprise as an avid Firefox user for over a decade. I had no choice but to ditch Firefox for Chrome as the browser itself started giving me ads to use Firefox on iOS and Android. The company is officially going down the toilet.
