YouTube says all video traffic is being throttled by T-Mobile, even if you opt out of Binge On

23 December, 2015
A YouTube spokesperson told the Wall Street Journal that T-Mobile is throttling all video traffic to its subscribers, whether or not you opted out of Binge On.

AnonD-480117, 24 Dec 2015You should at a minimum spend 2 seconds reading up on a top... moreWho says I was talking about YouTube?!

If YouTube is accusing T-Mobile of throttling, it's most likely throttling other services as well. My point is: it doesn't really matter as long as it's not evident. If HD videos are affected because of it it, then yes, problem. But if you can't notice the effects, does it really matter?

I'm in T-Mobile and no I don't have any issues and YouTube isn't part of the Binge On plan. I use unlimited data plan.

I am a T-Mobile USA customer. I have BingeOn turned off, and have had it so since it was introduced. I just tried to watch the Star Wars trailer on YouTube in 720p HD. My phone reported I got 320x180.

          I call "plausible".

Before calling "confirmed", want to check again in a couple of days when the network load is light. Christmas won't count.

AnonD-356282, 24 Dec 2015So has anybody complained of not being able to stream HD vi... moreYou should at a minimum spend 2 seconds reading up on a topic before commenting about it. YouTube isn't even part of the "Binge On" program so no, people that visit YouTube are not being given free data. That aspect of "Binge On" has absolutely nothing to do with YouTube, only the whole "throttling because it's a video streaming service even though you pay for X data at X speed a month". If that is still "awesome" to you why don't we just throttle everyone back to dial-up? Because wooooo free data on a totally different service!

AnonD-356282, 24 Dec 2015So has anybody complained of not being able to stream HD vi... moreThey're also throttling people who are paying for the data. And they aren't telling people that they are intentionally slowing their connection

So has anybody complained of not being able to stream HD videos? If not, then where is the problem?

They are giving away free data - that is awesome. If the service works as expected, who cares if it's throttled?

in the first place, youtube's caching and buffering sucks. they can accuse others after fixing themselves.

I'm all for free access to streaming sites (also I'd say it's about time streaming sites figured these deals out), but degrading the PAID data plan speeds on a persite basis? That's just asking to be sued to hell and back and then sued again.
