Samsung is turning things around in the mid range market, which helped grow samsung's market share despite high end s and note losing compared to the previous year. This is definitely where they should keep investing their efforts in.

Not all suppliers pays for products upfront, some pay only for the ones they do actually sell. For the ones that do not sell, they are shipped back and shipped out to another supplier that can sell them.

Samsung is definitely leading in that area and the year on year growth is way way way higher than Apple could ever archieved. Btw, the headline is literally only talking about 'shipments' . Hold your temper. Nobody said anything about sales or anything.

The retailers never order smartphones at ones. They order some amount of smartphones from the beginning, and if they go out of the stock, they order more. Again and again. And they pay those orders , so the the OEM gets their money.
If some brand doesn't sell so good(like the iphones) , the retailers don't order again , or order less. Smartphones that sell better have more orders. Shipment. Right?
No one retailer is forced to buy from the OEM more than he can sell.
And yes, the OEMs have their money. So no difference between sold or shipped for the OEM.

It always was going to end up this way. Sony made phones they wanted people to buy, not phones that people actually wanted. They were one of the first to go for the non-removable batteries; and now even Samsung is seeing that you can't force such design ideas onto the unwilling. Making their top phones waterproof was a masterstroke, but they had nothing to follow it up with. A complete failure.
