DenisXD, 18 Feb 2016That's nice, but making a smaller sensor with more mp means... moreApple uses sony's sensors in their phone. The High megapixel setting is a choice. Having the camera use less lets groups of pixel resources work together on capturing light, hence why the lower megapixel apple phones work better in low light, but they are using the same sensors with high megapixel capabilities. A good chunk of it is software difference man.

That's nice, but making a smaller sensor with more mp means a worse sensor. They should had make a bigger sensor instead with less mp for improved low light photography. But no, Sony needs to market 22,5 mpixels on a ridiculously small camera sensor.

A bigger camera sensor is always better than a smaller one, end of discussion

sony should improve their camera software even they use good sensor, their camera cant compete with the others .even with 1 mironmeter and large pixel their camera software are not good and the result are same just like z5.Also they have to drop the price because z5 is expensive than galaxy s6 ang lg g4.

This sensor would've been amazing at low-light photography if the effective resolution was reduced to 12.5mp. And they should just stop focusing on marketing the resolution of the camera and tell people more about how it will produce much better photos at night and other advantages.

Who cares if they even launch 50MP camera, they should just stick with 8MP until they can get that right without aggressive noise reduction destroying the perceived image resolution, or give us mobile raw so we have the choice to ditch their ridiculous JPG processing algorithm.

Z5 camera (sensor) was supposed to be the duck nuts, and all in all it is not even close to what it was supposed to yield in terms of quality and focus speed.

Pretty embarrassing for Sony when most competitors using the same SONY sensors are getting more out of them.

Though I believe the best would be if they go for the non plane sensors. That could allow them to give us larger sensor-area in camera-modules of the same height.

Currently it is the thin devices, and thus low height camera units, that is the real problem.

Even though I personally would MUCH prefer a 12Mpixel sensor over a 20Mpixel one of the same size (Similar to what Panasonic did with TZ70 after the beating the TZ60 took)

But as people are stupid and incompetent marketing guys have 'taught' them that larger number of pixels means better, I think it will be too hard to sell a reduced number. It is more likely that they will find fancy ways to get a larger effective sensor area that really matters and keeping the advertising numbers.

Another possibility is camera-arrays, but I guess this would require really high accuracy to work well.

The pixel-grid is somewhere between 2.4 and 2.5 microns, so the area of each pixel is about SIX times larger on the CM1.
So if we assume a fast F2.0 lens in front of this new sensor versus the F2.8 on the CM1, it will be at least TRICE as bad in poor light- on top of the diffraction issues from attempting to violate the laws of physics....

New 3 axis sensor must be expensive, it's must be a basic components for every high end device, it is a burden for other companies. That's why Samsung start research and development Britecell, but britecell looks weird it's less of green pixels.

Well with better stabilisation the shutter can remain open longer, so yeah I eouldn't expect a drop in quality.

It might very well be the best.
But that is because is has much larger pixels than other cameraphones.
                                  Not smaller!

" The sensor has a pixel pitch of 1.0μm, which is smaller than its predecessor, the popular IMX230. However, despite the smaller pixel size, Sony claims there is no drop in image quality in low light situations."

                                    That might be true.
The problem is that the IMX230 isn't good enough in low light situations.
There are improvements made to sensor technology which makes the pixels more light sensitive. Less prone to noise And there are improvements to processing of the data from the sensor.

But I would much rather see that they stay with the bigger pixels, and use this new tech to further improve low light performance.

I actually would even like to see a step back in resolution.
The small optics used in mobiles, is not sharp enough. Sure, in theory it's good to have a sensor that is better than the optics, but the resolution of the sensors today are much higher than the optical resolution of the optics.
And the sensors themselves really arent good enough. They seriously lack in low light performance. They produce too much noise. They lack in dynamic range.

I wish they instead made a 12 megapixel sensor, using the latest pixel tech. Kept the size of the IMX230 module and scaled up the pixels.
Sony took a step back to 12 megapixels with their A7s, and that did improve low light. And was good for video. So I wish they did the same in mobile sensors.

                                        isn't this basically Z5's IMX300 downgraded?
they have same AF feature (hybrid AF with stupid fast focus time), and that "3-axis" video stabilization (if you look closely, the stabilized video have less FOV and acts like Z5's Intelligent Active SteadyShot)
