First things first - this smartphone, just like ALL of the Ubuntu for Mobile Devices ("Ubuntu Phone"/"Ubuntu Touch") devices currently available, is targeted SPECIFICALLY at developers and "early-adopters"... It is NOT intended for "everyday users".
It's a work-in-progress, and at no point have Canonical or the Ubuntu Touch Development Team said that this is meant to be a finished product.
Secondly, Ubuntu for Mobile Devices takes a different approach to many of the design philosophies seen in Apple's iOS and Android... If you start using Ubuntu for Mobile Devices expecting a similar experience to Android and iOS, you're going to be in for a shock.
Thirdly, Canonical's "new way of doing things" approach actually does work... It takes a little getting used to, but the learning curve is not very steep and if you use Ubuntu for Mobile Devices with an open mind, you'll see that Canonical's design philosophies are pretty neat; some of you may even go as far as saying it's a better way of doing things.
Lastly, Ubuntu for Mobile Devices has some rough edges... I'd be lying if I said it didn't. But it's actually not as unfinished as many people would have you believe...
Yes, Ubuntu for Mobile Devices is NOT ready for everyday users just yet - but it's awfully close and if development keeps up (which looks to be the case), we should start to see consumer-focused mobile devices soon.

Ubuntu for Mobile Devices has its own content store, called (funnily enough) the "Ubuntu Store"... By default, all content is download via the Ubuntu Store, however compatible applications can be installed via other means (such as via Terminal) and eventually, you will be able to run "normal" Ubuntu programs on your Ubuntu Mobile Device.

Best decision I made over 7 years ago to switch to Ubuntu. Easy, Secure and fast. Will never go back to Microsoft or Apple!

Google is stopping their chrome OS for computers in favor of Android desktop OS. When that happens Linux distros Will gain prominence as developers might write their apps for other Linux distros as well because it will be either be based on gnome or KDE.

And they aren't in a hurry or running out of cash. Also, now that BlackBerry is switching to Android and Jolla is almost gone, there are people still looking for a smartphone with a non-American OS because of privacy concerns.
