AnonD-411204, 14 Apr 2016I believe you give Twister core a credit it does not deserv... moreI don't find benchmarks very useful. I use instead "time consumed to perform a typical use case" as a good metric. Both iPad Pro and High End Surface Pros equally excel. A direct comparison between the SoCs doesn't matter since they have to do different kind of calculations.

A9x in ipad pro actually feels faster than an i7 on a Windows machine. Of course a windows machine can do more, but in my mind both are the high end of their respective niches. The rest OEMs do not even bother to equip their tablets with anything nearing high end. For example Samsung just downgraded their Tab S2 tablet by using a weaker SoC than before, some companies even go backwards, that's how much they hate the tablet market.

Also the tablet market is not going down, it's just "resting", people buy new laptops less frequently than new phones. That's to be expected, doesn't mean that choice should become almost not existent. Don't take me wrong both ipads and surface Pros are excellent choices, but what about us that want or need a 3rd option? We're left out in the cold...

An A9(X) has 7424 KiB in its multilevel cache compared to 4736 KiB of a dual core Skylake. I point to this figure because once you move beyond Geekbench and Antutu and start using benchmarks that rely less on fixed functions ("easily" synthesizable in silicon), that force more cache misses because the code is so large so it doesn't fit in, and all memory access is not necessarily linear, you can start to see the real colors of a CPU. Case in point, BAPCo TabletMark. In this benchmark a Core M3 performs noticeably faster than an A9X for every day tasks like web and mail.

OTOH, I don't disagree with your closing paragraph, but the truth is that the tablet market has deflated the past couple of years and it was only normal the offer from the manufacturers would follow suit.

That's a 1.2GHz dual core A9, 1GB RAM. According to ARM, even a couple of smallish A53 at 1.3GHz (or two even smaller A7 at 1.6GHz) should be enough to keep up with them. As you see, I'm not particularly worried about this.

Stuttering on a website is different business and I agree with you it can be damning. But I have seen it happen on Xeon E5s. I have read around it happens on Macs running Safari. On tablets, using both a Tab S 8.4 and Nexus 7 2013, I run Chrome with JS globally disabled and white listed selective sites. That normally does away with most stutter (and XSS), but does not eliminate it.

I much prefer the 3:2 employed by Microsoft as it is great both in portrait but also not useless for media. 2nd best is 16:10 that most androids use, it's closer to 3:2 that either 4:3 or 16:9 . I guess 1.41:1 of Pixel C is fine too.

        So it goes like this

        1: ideal) 3:2
        2: median) 1.41:1 or 16:10
        3: extreme) 4:3 or 16:9

If the 8 inch tablet had stereo front facing speakers, it would hands down be the nicest Android tablet. I don't usually like Samsung products, but the design on the 8.0 inch S2 is really good and feels great in the hand. And the 4:3 aspect ratio is far better for a tablet, than the 16:9 screens on most other tablets.

But the speaker on this thing just sucks. Once you've heard stereo front facing speakers you can't go back. I mean, seriously Samsung? On a device that is meant to above all be a media device? Where people will watch lots of videos and movies? On a tablet, that has plenty of space in it (compared to a phone) stereo speakers are easy. I don't know how Samsung can have gotten something so wrong, on an otherwise very premium device.

Apart from surface pro the rest are using Core-M and even more are using Atom SoCs. In fact only Microsoft and Apple are using high end parts for their tablets (high PPI + Best processor in class + As much Ram as possible for the class + Best GPU per watt).

Everybody else is using low end or mid end (at best) parts, it's sad 'cause I love tablets, my phone would never be a replacement of my tablet. Sadly I'm stuck with my Note tablet because I have yet to find a way to actually upgrade it (Apple is too restrictive, Surface Pro is too big for my needs and I love my laptop anyways...)

This dumbing down of the S2 goes to show that non-Windows tablets are going stale. In any case, to see better 4K content we need much better displays, not faster processors.

Apple created the best tablet for 2016, period. Let's hope that it will serve as a wake up call to the rest.

I have Galaxy note 10.1 2014 (SD800). After almost two and half of years it is still so powerful and good! But Samsung was stupid enough to discontinue those great series!

Just imagine a Galaxy Tab S 8.4 with Note feature and a powerful processor like SD823!

Samsung puts far weaker processors in its tablets (compared to its smartphones) and I find it stupidity!

I don't like to buy from apple but these days there are no competitors in tablet market anymore; maybe Pixel C but it has no pen.

I'm not a fan of these tablets. I believe they're overpriced and they're not exciting in any way. The original S Tabs were far more exciting.

Oh wait they are not they finally catched up with Samsung's very own Note Tablet in features ... the very tablet that Samsung discontinued and have now replaced it with half arsed attempts.

Imagine what would happen if Samsung continued with the Note Tablet. Now theirs would be the king of features not ipad "pro".

                                        "Updated" : Exynos 5433 is/was a better cheap.

Samsung knowingly do bad moves regarding their Android tablets so that they can seem bad compared to Windows tablets. But no matter what they'll do a desktop OS (windows) will never be good as a consumption OS. Even at this pittyful state Tab S series is better than Tab S pro as *tablets* (worse as laptops, but there are better laptops than both abyway)...
