Tell me how many cars do you see strictly following that principle in those places? If everyone "follows the book" and keep 2 car lengths away from each other, a 1 km jam could jolly well extend to become a 2-3 km jam lol.
Look, I'm not saying everyone should drive unsafe/not follow the correct ways/rules, but rules are dead, humans are flexible, and these autopilot are just deader than the rules because they only respond to what they are programmed for and not outside of that and as of now, they clearly aren't ready for primetime like what Tesla/Google likes us to think.
Unless you outlaw/remove all human drivers off the road and have only autopilot on the road that network with each other on the traffic conditions, human and autopilot are accidents in the making (just need to base on this video which Tesla is using to "promote their tech")
Constantly blaming the human because they are "tailgating" you (the autopilot), when you (the autopilot) is constantly jamming the brakes is hypocritical at best.
Do you know what is a popular accessory for cars (at least in my country and some others) this recent few years? They are those in-car front viewing camera recorders. Why? So they can avoid needing to pay asshats human drivers who go around overtaking other cars and then jamming their brakes over nothing. The poor car/driver behind having not enough time to react more often than not will rear-end the front car (with the asshat driver). So with these recorders they'll have proof it's not their fault that they rear-end the car in front.
If these autopilot gets approved in your countries, i would reckon these front viewing camera recorders will grow in popularity given the similar scenario here. Although we can't really blame the autopilot as that's how it's being programmed but who else will you blame? The company (Google/Tesla)? Your government? Yourself?

Manual technology is absolute, why do two things while driving instead of giving full concentration to driving, rather than shifting gears!! I don't understand why would someone wants to shift gears up and down constantly, specially in traffic. Stop trying to look like you're someone special because you drive manual
I've been driving manual for the last 10 yeara and I hate it. Can't change cars, but will at the first chance.

First of all, the video is not in real time so it's somewhat hard to say how hard did it brake.
And secondly, from your comments I'm getting a feeling that you've never heard of "safety distance". By law (and by common sense) you HAVE TO keep enough distance between yourself and the car in front of you, so you don't hit him if he slams the brakes. "Two-second rule".
If the autopilot decides to suddenly stop for whatever reason and you rear-end him, it's YOUR fault because you were tailgating him.

Then again abrupt stops are indeed weird and I don't know why they don't fix that, if not for anything else it makes for a less pleasant travel.

The number of times the autopilot jams it's brakes is really unnecessary for some.
00:22 - human car turning into the road the autopilot is driving - unnecessary to stop the car fully (just need to slow down)
00:32 - autopilot stops the car abruptly after just turning left to a new road (if a car was following behind, an accident may occur)
00:41 - autopilot stops the car abruptly again way before the junction (if a car was following behind, another accident)
1:17 - autopilot stops the car due to a merging sideroad? (again if a car was following behind, another accident)
1:32 - autopilot jams brakes for 2 joggers at the side? (again if a car was following behind, another accident)
2:34 - autopilot stops car due to "oncoming" traffic on the other lane? (if a car was travelling on this main road behind, another accident)
why does the autopilot jams it's brakes so much? Are we following the philosophy: "As long as I (as in the autopilot) don't hit anything it's not my (as in the autopilot's) fault if others hit me (as in the autopilot) behind"?
All that said, the parking was lovely though.

Xz8441, 21 Nov 2016I'm not sure if i'm looking at the video wrongly or they ar... morei havent watched the video..but from what i know..unless each and every car has an AI inside that is connected to each other car like a hive intelligence, that can do traffic analysis, this won't work...as someone pointed out..there is human error..the only way to get rid of that is to remove control from humans altogether..and we'll have to remove pedestrians too..may not be practical for another 50 years or so

AnonD-159576, 21 Nov 2016It is already real life and has achieved 500,000 auto pilot... moreI'm not sure if i'm looking at the video wrongly or they are purposely pausing/slowing down the video at junctions etc, but if i am right, the number of times the autopilot jammed it's brake way before a junction/side road/pedestrians would almost certainly cause an accident with a car that is cruising/travelling behind this autopilot in a more populated/congested part of a city/country.
Then they'll say it's human error because the car with the human driving kissed the backside of this autopilot... and not because this autopilot jams it's brakes as and when it likes to.
There's so many instances in that video where the autopilot unnecessarily stops the car fully by jamming it's brakes where a human driver won't (but will slow down instead).
