Lcd is superior not only in peak brightness but also in color and longevity. Sony has added many improvements over the years to the point where blacks are so good you can't tell the difference between amoled and their.

Also I heard xperia phones will have oled in 2018. However it will be superior to any other oled display due to the improvements made by research universities which will be shared JDI and joled. Both companies share their technologies which means Japanese oled will be superior to what lg and Samsung is offering

AnonD-521587, 22 Jan 2017lol finally someone who knows about CLEDIS. Cledis is defin... moreI will 90% agree with your statement. Samsung's in-store S7s run for 24 hours a day all week, there's a reason why the displays have problems but with regular use, usually there are almost never burn-in related issues. In a normal usage cycle, people only keep their screens on maximum 4-5 hours a day and there are many different screens and split intervals of use so with regular use, you will never experience image retention or burn in. The Z3 does not compare to the S7 in color accuracy and color gamut when the S7 is in AMOLED Cinema mode, however, the XZ can compare since the panel supports a wider color gamut with higher color accuracy and much better contrast. I hope this LCD panel in this article has even better contrast, is brighter, uses less power than the XZ's display, and supports a wider and more accurate color gamut. The advantage of CLEDIS is no burn in, absolute pure blacks at every single pixel, and support of near BTU.2020 color gamut at near 90% with extremely accurate colors and the contrast level is out of this world.

besides jdi is making so many improvments with OLED technology that comes from various research universities. it's arleady on its way to be superior to LG's and samsung offering.

Tourettes Guy, 20 Jan 2017Because they (Sony) gave PROPER and REASONABLE REASONS to g... morelol finally someone who knows about CLEDIS. Cledis is definitely the future and it will just desotry all other displays.

Lol at people who think a basic number like QHD which is just a number and a marketing scheme. I love how effective marketing is to the point where everyone is convinced QHD amoled are superior.

even my z3 has superior colors so the s7 when i went in store. I also have the s5 and the s5 has this super ugly yellowish hue all over the sceen making everything just look smudgy and ugly. so horrible.

the amoled's blue die out quick which means you get this ugly yellow hue all over the screen. LCD panels last longer and are better with colors. It's an old technolgoy that has been refined over and over again to near perfection. Even the deep blacks on LCD now can match amoled. Sony XZ has the best LCD display on any smartphone ever made its that good.

OLED also has problems with burn ins. I believe Sony plans on putting an OLED screen on 2018 lineup. I think there are definitely advantages to that mostly because of power efficiency and the ability for the panels to take up less space and be thinner, which means more things to put for other technology.

it's a natural step for sony as their larger than average sensors require space and all the audio tech and whatnot that goes into their smartphones.

CLEDIS will be definitely be the killer of all other displays. It combines the advantages of everything and will be very cheap to manufacture over time.

lest we forget that sony was the first to make the first OLED panel. It was just created during a time when OLED didn't have much use and it was just bad timing.

people forget sony is the king of display technology lol. and prettymuch anything eletronic since the 70s. get out here with cheap ass LG and Samsung.

Tourettes Guy, 20 Jan 2017So you want to be fair? Okay, I'll mention Sony's mid range... moreDoomed? I really don't think so, they don't have the logistics to do so, bad marketing and weak worldwide presence.

AngryLithuanian, 19 Jan 2017R.I.P your English. Have you even read the full article?... moreForgetting one word, "with", in my comment doesn't constitute "R.I.P." my English. I think your English meant to say "Why [are] you so pissed..." :-)

Also, stop being melodramatic. No one is angry, pissed, or over-excited, nor did anything in my comment suggest such...nothing grammatical, nor any specific punctuation. Deeper blacks and thinner borders are already possible, OEMs just need to stop buying the cheaper panel. Lower battery drain? Relative to what, other QHD screens? Keep it at FHD/400 or so ppi and you'll save that just in the lower GPU strain.

The space between subpixel groups will be the same no matter the resolution with any given technology, so the higher the ppi, the worse the screen door effect is. This is why I'm against QHD at these sizes. They're dimmer, eat more battery, strain the SoC more, and provide not substantial benefit.

These so-called "achievements" seldom ever make it back down to lower resolutions where the benefits would be even greater, so this is why I'm also not thrilled by these "achievements."

However, Samsung was the first manufacturer to introduce the tech to the mobile industry.

Thus Sony cell display pix on thus article is beautiful works of engineering!!

Do you even understand that statement? If something is sharp, then it means it packs a lot of details, is there any other meaning of that? Basic statement, even a 1-year old kid could easily understand that

I think screens will need some testing to verify their content resolution from this point.

Tourettes Guy, 19 Jan 2017"So sharp but so little details" wtf does that even mean? I... moreYou probably don't know what upscale is... You won't get more details, just edges are shown in less pixels so you get feeling of hi-res, but it's not.

Anonymous, 20 Jan 2017Whaaaaaaa??? You change your mind now? You said 2k useless.... moreYou funny.

I said always FHD is sufficient and a smarter choice over 2K just and indeed because of energy consumption problem...and the difference in usage is neglectable on 5 to 5.5 inch screens, human eye doesnt notice the difference at anything over 400 dpi.
(" 441 ppi is well above what a person with perfect 20/20 vision can see from 30-40 cm away")

If one is into mobile googles VR, one should get a 2K-4K mobile device, ( 2K is also not sufficient for VR), but for that there are better mobile VR solutions than lame lens based screen enhancing googles, like selfstanding mobile dedicated VR screen systems....
JDI just developed a 3,65 inch hi res VR dedicated LTPS lcd screens with 90 hz refresh rate and 3-6 ms response time, aiming exactly at that niche.

Why would anyone mind a 2k screen if it is more power efficient like this LTPS lcd screen is?
Especially with new posibillities and added enhancements like better blacks, pixel eyes v2, higher refresh rate of 90hz, less screen door effect for VR apps, all that poly silicone structure gives it?

                            Dont make things up.

Anonymous, 20 Jan 2017Whaaaaaaa??? You change your mind now? You said 2k useless.... moreBecause they (Sony) gave PROPER and REASONABLE REASONS to go 2K, and that's because their OLED technology that they will use is a lot more efficient than Samsung's weak AMOLED panels. Just wait until Sony incorporates CLEDIS on their Xperia branding, a combination of OLED and LCD's advantages and removing their disadvantages. CLEDIS will beat the crap out of Samsung's ass in display technology. Even if late, if it's worth the wait, then why not? Everybody says "It's better late than never" lol

Okay, I'll mention Sony's mid rangers and old flagships. The M5, M4, M4 Aqua, C5 Ultra, C4, Z5, Z5 Compact, Z3+, Z3, Z3 Compact, and Z2 all have LCDs with whiter whites than any AMOLED displays from Samsung, the S7 and S7 Edge are no excuse. Prove it?
                                http://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-s7/694351-why-my-s7-screen-over-saturated-please-answer-quick.html
                                http://www.androidheadlines.com/2016/03/galaxy-s7-edge-display-analysis-shows-amoleds-pros-cons.html
"The tests revealed that every color missed its target point on the sRGB color space, making it oversaturated, which is something common with AMOLED displays."
You can love oversaturated colors if you want, just don't expect it to be as accurate as LCDs can go, because they never will. You know what, AMOLED is one of the most overrated display technology in the world. It's not so much better than the LCDs, because while bringing some slight advantages over them, they bring a lot of major disadvantages against LCDs. CLEDIS, a display technology developed by Sony, announced at CES 2017, is the true future of displays. It offers the advantages of AMOLED and LCD and removing their drawbacks as well. Yes they have lesser pixels, but those pixels are so tiny, a 100 ppi CLEDIS = >1,000 ppi LCD. That's how sharp the display is, thus it is far more efficient because the LEDs as pixels are non-backlight, I repeat, NON-BACKLIGHT so no blooming effect whatsoever. They are self-emissive, which means they have the ability to turn themselves off when needed, just like AMOLEDs can, but like I said, aside from they're more power efficient, they're also easier and cheaper to produce because they don't use organic materials unlike AMOLEDs do. In 2018 or 2019, Sony will incorporate the technology to the Xperia division, and Samsung & Apple are doomed in terms of sales, mark my words

The problem with the whites are long gone and you can calibrate the display to your liking.

To prove it further, many of my friends own a Note 3, J5, and J5 2016, and all of the, have crap looking whites, too much yellow even without any reference. Another friend of mine owns an iPhone 6 and the display looked way better than the one on my friend's S5. As expert says, "Nothing could be more accurate as our eyes can see it."
