Samsung DeX Station to give the Galaxy S8 Continuum-like features

25 January 2017
Samsung just trademarked the name, describing it as a way of "projecting the screen of a mobile device to displays".

AnonD-100398, 27 Jan 2017I can see how helpless you feeling after reading my comment... moreThis isn't the same continuum, this will offer similar features but it will in fact be running on android which works a hell of a lot better for multitasking than windows mobile.

[deleted post]I can see how helpless you feeling after reading my comment but its ok i can undersand ur frustration, however itd clear that samsung made a huge mistake by omitting mhl tv out since s6 and now they are looking forward to provide the half baked continuum feature in s8 which already failed on windows platform...they sud provide proper 4k tv out mirror function in addition to continuum. try a better counter reply next time lol.

I have a DEX, and I believe its Samsung's way to introduce desktop and phone continuity like Apple, for instance... imessenger and more!

Julliard, 26 Jan 2017Microsoft market is declining as less people feel the need ... moreI completely agree but that doesn't mean the OS will disappear. Heck if anything the crazy jump in shares for 2-in-1 style laptops shows people ultimately want a device that can do everything. That's just the beginning. I think the future will revolve around the personal device you carry and everything else will be dumb peripherals that uses the cpu cycles from that device. And of course that's what this whole continuum/Dex thing is about. MS just scales properly for all these scenarios.

So if you have a foldable tablet/smartphone. You unfold it the adaptive shell goes into tablet mode, you fold it it goes into mobile mode. Samsung is just showing that they see something in this future. For the most part most people won't need to use it in that manner. But those times you need to write a paper for school, do some office work at home, you can get into a more professional work method without spending money on more hardware that your phone already has.

krystian, 25 Jan 2017What would be even better is if Samsung could create a sepa... moreMicrosoft market is declining as less people feel the need to have pcs or laptops. At home, a smartphone and tablet is sufficient enough. At work, computers/laptops are provided. Only students buy those pc laptops or notebook. This old computer things will gradually disappear in the next 20-30 years. Our grandchildren will be like, "PCs? Computers? Whats that?". Remember how typewriter was a thing 30 years ago? Yeah, exactly.

What would be even better is if Samsung could create a separate instance of full windows 10 to run on the external monitor. If they did that before MS I would laugh hard.

This is MS's end goal. Right now windows 10 mobile is a transitional OS for perfecting ARM code. Windows 10 on ARM is the next evolution with chips becoming powerful, storage and ram cheaper. The adaptive shell is really one of the last steps into merging Windows 10 fully. So you will be running full windows 10 on your mobile device just with the mobile shell. Then you hook it up to a monitor it adapts with presenting the desktop shell. The area where MS is really seeing things better is the adaptive UWP apps. They scale properly no mater what device you are running in. The UI can change for an app from mobile to desktop but still be the same app.

With that said, MS has always been great with starting trends but not making them popular. Ahh I remember Bill gates showing off a tablet and then it disappearing for decades before coming back as the next big thing.

No, I was talking about multiwindow tasking. And Continuum is not the same as TV-out or Apple PC (Mac) remote control. It's the first step to replace PC with smartphones.

In fact you could in theory ditch your pc and use your TV as a monitor. As long as all you need starts and ends with office use , it already has office support (officially too) , so -yeah- it's the ultimate PC/laptop ditcher. That's a first.

Of course if you have more complicated needs that can only be found on PCs you'd probably still need one. Althought I hear that Snapdragon 835 devices would be able to run full windows. So surely people on XDA would be able to boot windows in this thing, COMPLETELY killing the need for all PCS (x86 software would run via bytecode translation).
