But the success of any company is frequent and consistent updates in an agile manner, which is what Apple have been doing since day 1, and Samsung do to a degree with their high end phones.
Taking risks is an entirely different matter and requires a large amount of R&D money, not everyone can afford that obviously.

LEAKS says Nokia working on foldable 10inch phone calling Phonetransformer who will be compact phone and tablet in one device. But keeping in secret to blow market. Figuratively for sure. Also 360 angle camera in phone.

It rode off the success of the iPod for years. The first iPhone lacked countless features that even their most basic competitors had, it took them years to build a phone that could stand on its own without relying on the iPod.
Apple phones became big for two reasons, brand name and they were simple. A lot of people enjoy simple.
Samsung phones became big because they were everything the iPhone wasn't. Till now they are still the only company in the market to take risks and try new things.

when the industry has platued samsung just come out with new pointless features such as an edge to get customers excited and buy it. a foldable phone has no benefits. unless people want smaller phones all of and want to unfold it to watch netflix, i cant see the point in them.... just another samsung gimmick which will be extremely expensive, even compared to the edges.... at least the likes of sony apple and huawei have their heads screwed on and work on practicallity and upgrading quality.

Apple surrendered the trend with iPhone 6 and even more so with iPhone 7 (some features being exclusive to bigger iPhone.) bigger phones have bigger batteries, better endurance, more room for other circuitry and most importantly people nowadays do much more with phones that they wouldn't if phones were 4.0".
