AnonD-5363, 04 Apr 2011I would really like to know how quickly each manufacture up... moreYes, the Nexus S, because is the official google android phone is the benchmark where the engineers test and develops the upgrade version of android, that's why he get the update on the air first. Basically go in this way, when the google engineers develops the android update the hardware benchmark that they are using is the Nexus S and that's it! they are not interested in testing in multiple device,of course. They just approve the nexus S to work with the android update and after, is up the the manufacturer to figure it out how to make it work with their own hardware devices. The example of this process can be seen for the update froyo and gingerbread; as we remember the nexus one was build by HTC (scorpion cpu and blablabla) basically a copy of the desire, that's why when google release the froyo for nexus one, the next mounth was official also for desire, because same hardware, so, not to much trouble for the HTC engineers to fix it, but for samsung galaxy S it took many mounts before going official via kies because the hardware was totally different. Nowadays is the opposite as we can see the nexus S is build by samsung (hummerbird cpu and blablabla) so a copy of the galaxy S, thats why very soon we will get gingerbread 2.3.3 also in the good "old" galaxy S but will be many mounts or maybe never that will come on the old Desire or desire HD (HTC engineers will focus on desire S and incredible S).....anyway this is just my opinion....

I think one thing is clear as we have seen it, if we want to have constantly OFFICIAL update of the OS we MUST to buy the company flagship smartphone, otherwise...byebye, maybe, will see :-).... for example:
google ---> nexus S
samsung --> galaxy S
HTC ------> incredible S
These are right now the available best smartphone out there, and as we have read on gsma, they all have or will get soon gingerbread 2.3.3. The samsung galaxy S is the best example, it started with eclair, and already get 2 official update, froyo and soon gingerbread, I think because is the flagship phone. what you guys think about it?

Amazing that there are no Nokia or Symbian fans bashing Android in this Android related article yet on EVERY Nokia or Symbian related article, there are many Android fans that come just to bash Nokia and Symbian. Thats what I find amazing here.

The delays are because most manufacturers like to put their own customised skin over the top of Android, HTC Sense UI etc.
If phone manufacturers released phones with pure Android (ala the nexus phones) it would be a lot easier to update them quickly after a new version was released.
As for development. Its not too difficult to cover all the 2.0+ versions in one App, in fact coping with all the screen sizes available is a bigger issue.
That said, even iOS isn't as "One piece of code for all" as they'd like to make out.

Lol... They are claiming fragmentation is reducing... Now when phones with 2.3 and 3.0 will be out we will see the fragmentations widen. I dont think that % handsets on 1.5 and 1.6 are geting upgraded their % has reduced because their nos are constant and the size has increased... its just that they are going to be lost in oblivian... They are the people who trusted the OS and gave it the initial push... and are being rewarded by being left out...
As newer version's come out... we'll only see the fragmentation move...

Android is a fragmented mess, Google should start enforcing a strict update policy. Keep the third party customizations but force manufacturers to update their phones.
They should also enforce a guaranteed updates policy for a period of time, make it two years, so customers will know for sure that for two years they'll receive all the updates that come out.
A manufacturer that can't keep up with those policies can fuck off! Lower the amount of phones you release, release less phones and concentrate on updating and supporting them.
iOS is light years ahead of Android in this department, at least you know that apps will work and you'll get updates for two years, that is perfect and gives you a sense of security and longevity.
And Google... Hardware Accelerated UI, FFS! Come on!

It's still too early for 2.3 plus all the new phones have not come out. I reckon the realistic figure will come towards the end of the year!
