Unless a company develops a working device that uses a specific design or technology for it's function, they should not be granted a patent to it! This rubbish that apple is pulling is just nonsense! Also the US Patent system is broken and should be reworked so patent trolls don't exist.

Anonymous, 13 Jun 2017Read the article, Apple filed it in Q2, Z5 was released in Q4I mean the Z5 is the first phone to have the power button as a fingerprint sensor. BRUH not the first fingerprint sensor phone its the first power button fingerprint sensor phone. *facepalm*

Anonymous, 13 Jun 2017Read the article, Apple filed it in Q2, Z5 was released in Q4Power button fingerprint sensor, not the home button fingerprint sensor . *cough*

These patents are just dumb. 68 patents seriously? It sounds like they just sat down and wrote up every place you could possibly imagine to put a fingerprint reader. Anybody could do that, in little time, without much imagination. That is not the point of patents which are supposed to be for "non-obvious" things.

Also, as others have pointed out, Sony already actually makes a phone with the fingerprint reader on the power button. You shouldn't be able to get a patent for something you've never made and never marketed, but that someone else already has on an existing product that people are actually buying. That's just dumb. How can anyone possibly have invented and design that someone else has produced and sold?

When Apple does this it shows how much they are not about innovation. They are about anti-competitive practices (which after all is what a patent is--a government sanctioned monopoly on a specifid product). Apple has tons of money and a huge army of lawyers who just sit around and right up anything anyway with half a brain can think if, whether or not that every produce the product. Then that toss a thousand patent applications at the patent office scattershot style, see what sticks, and in the future are sure to always have something in their folder of lawyer tricks to sue other companies over, when the make something that Apple couldn't be bothered to manufacture themselves.

They could put it on the back where the apple logo is. It would blend in well since the apple logo has a big enough footprint to house a finger print reader.

Anonymous, 13 Jun 2017That gives less than six months to Sony. Sony probably got ... moresony has this tech years before the only reason they didn't file for a patent in USA is because they don't consider USA as a large market for sony phones as of the moment the focus is on asian region expanding to europe. And please read more cause almost 50% of apples technology is inspired by SONY, its just that japanese are ethical when it comes to business they are not as much as greedy as others.

Rimoti, 13 Jun 2017How about the Lg G5? You mean the g5, the g6, the V10, the v20, other Asian phones, the Nextbit Robin... I will never buy another apple product again.

Regarding when they filed the patent, I don't care. Apple files patents on stuff to screw people. Not because they are going to use it now, but because they might, at some point, use it later on, in the future, some day, but not yet because they don't need it now, but one day, eventually, at a future date, sometime, later, in the months or years to come, or maybe not, but no one else can use it either because they thought of it first. Even though they aren't and are not planning on using anytime soon.
