Google will only solve this problem when, like Microsoft, it takes on the role of keeping all Android devices up-to-date, whether it's hers or not.

For everyone, I don't care about updates because I only have entry-level phone with marshmallow os, using some native apps/stock on android, playstore, playing games is pretty sophisticated,
Back when I had a Symbian Nokia like E63, N70, when I have it does not think for updates, just sms, phone, games and photos, yes though it used to have no updates like android and ios now, now i'm happy with the touch screen in my hand,
Indeed not all android phone get updates, I think only flagship phone (Nexus and Pixel) and certain brands (mid-range phone, One and Go maybe) just get updates, with my budget maybe I will buy new phone and certain new os if android 100-200 euro maybe it's Nokia 2, Nokia 3, Moto E4 and Moto E4 plus or another choice iPhone 5, IPhone 5s, There many here also speak about problem between Android, iPhone, Windows Phone, Symbian, Blackberry, etc., please note all brands have such a glorious period as Symbian and Blackberry, Windows Phone as well, once Nokia is called a million people with mobile phone, now also Android and iPhone was called cellphone billion people, so all have glorious period, especially with update that I don't think it should not be a problem.

Well, to be honest who dont want windows on tbeir tablet and pcs. But, the same problem of updates willl still persist. Windows phone from many brands like Samsung, HTC, LG, Alcatel, ZTE, Acer, Huawei & Lenovo. They all will have fast updates on flagship only and launch old windows bersion with no updates on the cheaper midranger amd lowbudget phone. No difference from android universe. On the bright side, Lumia or Surface brand would be like windows version of Nexus and Pixel. Symbian still would die anyway. Blackberry might stays a little longer.

If android wasn't there Windows Phone would have had many apps and there would be no app gap and it would be android of today and it didn't had any update problem like android.

This is just a hell news for devs. While iOS devs would switch to latest version very easily after some month of release, but the Android is different. It's V8.0, but most devs target V5 or 6. Seems version 6 is new for now, 7 in beta stage, and 8 in alpha. too bad.

The problem is not in Google releasing new versions annually, but in not being able to make that version arrive in as many devices as possible and in a short time.

Lumina, 14 Nov 2017Same. I'm still using my first ever smartphone --- the Xper... moreNot long ago I played with a Motorola Titanium, which was in this version (and was released in the days when it already had Android Ice Cream Sandwich). The customization even tried to help, but the experience is very bad.
Curious that at the time, I still managed to install WhatsApp on it.

Anonymous, 14 Nov 2017Cupcake anyone? :DIf Froyo is already difficult to handle in 2017, imagine Cupcake?
I've played in a Motorola Cliq XT (Quench) and in a HTC Magic not so long ago, and you quickly realize how precarious this version is.

To tell you the truth, you can still handle Android Jelly Bean, but Ice Cream Sandwich, Honeycomb and Gingerbread in 2017 is difficult to use.

Curious still have 7.4% that use the versions Gingerbread, Ice Cream Sandwich or Jelly Bean in the end of 2017.

Who could afford $600-1000 flagship? Not your average Joe of course. Billions of human wont have a smartphone and the world would be less connected and we as a human race would still live like early 2000. Android is a game changer that is there to fill in the gap. Be grateful it exist atleast. All those beautiful advanced technology you see these day thanks to android. The real problem is android manufacturer refuses to use stock android which admitedly lack interesting features compared to ones offered by other manufacturer custom skins. This produce segregation in fast update and slow update. Flagship get fast update and price higher due to more R&D and software development budget used on them. Midrange and low budget phone have slow or almost no update because they just borrow whatever previous year flagship software to reduce R&D cost thus making them cheaper with old android version. But of course it possible to make midrange or low budget phone using latest android, BUT with one condition, it will definitely use the boring stock android that most people find unappealing. On the bright side, its cheaper than flagship. There is no such thing as flagship with stock android unless it is Nexus or Pixel.

Features and security updates need to be delivered somehow, it doesn't matter too much for other manufacturers, if it gets released as a "Large" update or "Small" update.
Except if it would be only "Small" updates, they possibly wouldn't bother to adapt these updates at all..
We can only hope Google "Treble" feature works, it aims to split Android OS from other manufacturer visual additions, so users theoretically would receive a Android OS update, without the original manufacturer having to re-program their OS to work with the new update.
