Never up-to-date, never secure,... moreNot to mention, some devices have feature X and lack feature Y, whereas another device will have feature Y but lacks feature Z and X.
It's just an ecosystem of compromises.
I remember in the early years, it was much more simple. The Moto Droid had the best specs. Then came the Nexus One. Then came the HTC EVO 4G. Then came the Samsung Galaxy S EPIC 4G. Then came the Galaxy S2. Then came the Samsung NOTE.
After this point, things started to get mixed/compromised. I would say the next best phone was a slight upgrade in the form of the HTC One X. Then came the Note 3. Then came the Note 4. Then came the S6 Active. Then came the LG V20. Then came the S8 Plus. Next is probably the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus in March 2019 (all other phones will be much slower, won't get QSD 845 until 3 months later).
So you either learn to live and accept the many annoying faults of Android.
....or give up your freedom and liberty to the Apple overlords.

On the other hand, tech-savvy people who understand exactly how software, hardware and services work - these people would not even touch an Android device. Well.. maybe play with it as a toy, but never use it as a personal device to store private information.

Was very ... moreWell, if privacy is main concern for you, I got a bad news for you, major OS like Apple macOS/iOS, Google Chrome OS/Android, Microsoft Windows or Samsung Experience/Tizen always came with data mining, so they know what you did and what you like, so they could "suggest" you with the news or apps that you may interested, it's all part of the "experience" and "make our life easier".
That only left you with one choice on mobile space, Sailfish OS, at least they haven't had the resources to do the mining, YET.

no one wants to update because its never compatible with the current phone unless that phone is manufactured with that version of android. always problems when updating.

On desktop we get direct updates for Windows OS from MS even if the bloat wares are installed by OEMs. In the same way Google should directly able to update OS even if it comes with blot wares pre-installed. Otherwise OEMs won't even care to update their OS on old handsets & prefers to launch new handset with latest OS.

That is fair, given that Marshmallow and Nougat are the ones that are still ahead, some even the majority can not be updated because the specifications are not supportive and it does need a project treble, I am proud as Marshmallow, though with entry level phone it may be there once can not updated, but maybe i will buy new phone with Nougat os.

same on all OEMs those who are still launching mobiles with nougat... some OEMs are avoiding oreo just because of project treble

For example, I update my HTC10 from Marshmallow to Nougat, later on I found that HTC unleashed the two high performance CPU on light tasks (which was restrained by Marshmallow and only use 2 weaker cores for light tasks).
My 10 battery life is shit now.
Another example, way further, I run my HTC One M8 with Lollipop 5.0.2. Now it lags and lags and need constant Boost up. Hate it and it was fluid on KitKat.
Imagine M8 with arshallow, it would gone from bad to worse.
So I would think twice before doing OS update next time!

Still using my Note 8.0 with Android 4.04 daily.
Was very suspicious about upgrading my Galaxy A3 to 7.x considering Google taking advance of their dominance on MobileOS and being as worse as Microsoft on spying on users.
After all these years with Windows, IOS and Android I want a new OS from a new company, not yet another update.

Huawei already updated my Mate 9 with Oreo and Treble, so now I'm waiting to see if their promise of monthly security updates is true. I used to get almost monthly updates already, but it was always a month behind the Pixels. Hoping to get January's update in January, not in February. :-)

No surprise here! Oreo seems to be way too hard to implement. Even custom roms are so lagging behind & still not stable. Only pixels currently have stable Oreo.
Hope Android Pie does a better job

they keep saying will hasten and push OEM for update, but until now even largest share in android like Samsung also not yet release Oreo, compared to Apple that when they announce new iOS version, we can get it by weeks later. Might as well Android roll out to all OEM to update first, only they announce. Else it's like i am telling the world we have Oreo update, but nobody can use it, FML

In few months' time it will be time for Android P ! With oreo at maybe 8-10% ... than everyone will ask for P ... suddenly oreo development has to stop and Focus on P will increase... and P's adoption will also have similar growth numbers as oreo's... i suppose

As much as I love Android, updating in Android world was.... basically a joke, they did improve a bit through out the year, but the whole waiting period was still almost the same. I am not even talking about major update, even the security update was slow, I already received spectre and meltdown update from Google, Microsoft and Apple, yet my S7 edge was still stuck on October security update.
I don't mind slower major update from Samsung, since their UI was deeply integrated into the OS, so still understandable for their slower major update.
But on the other hand, Motorola totally destroy their own legacy, even running on 99% stock Android their update was slower than modified UI.
