The code of Windows 95 is so simple that it will run with few bugs. But, with less features too. No I am not trolling, just showing you a concrete example.
I'd say Apple's move is intelligent because they use a simple code and permits them to have quick OS and fast updates but in the same time there is a drawback as they have less features versus Android.
I'd prefer Android because I am really a power user and not just for bragging purpose (I am using Tasker, Windows SMB and this are only examples) but Android could be far better than what it is actually, just take the example of Windows 10 management on desktop which can be installed on hardware of 2001 to 2018

Jelly Bean was the best, far better at real multitasking streaming movies and music and playing games and... all at the same time without pausing/freezing anything in the background! Every version after Jelly Bean have become worse and worse..., maybe more "secure" but also more restricted and less usable!

I love android. It is very easy to use and enjoy every bit of it. Jelly Bean/KitKat/Marshmallow/Nougat/Oreo are the best versions for me. Don't know why but I don't like iOS and it's locked system.

I believe there is no real/big software upgrades since jelly bean... infact i have used lollipop marshmallow and nougat on my s6edge with real difference. Google is just changing name every year for name sake. Hence the adoption is slow. Coz its not needed in the first place !
My niece has nokia 6. Oreo in available but she's not upgrading coz it doesn't bring anything new apart fron bragging rights

Anonymous, 11 Feb 2018Android 8 has been around months, still many phones in 201... moreThe reason they do that is because that version is stable. I rooted my note 4 and installed lollipop 5.0. It was as unstable as hell until 5.1 so I went back to using jelly bean. I did manage to use Marshmallow but it was not battery friendly.
I have found lollipop only to be stable when installed as the main OS not an upgrade. And that goes for most of the Android OS's. So now that 8.1 is available it will reach us some ime soon

Originally Android was going to be named alphabetically after popular Androids(what else lol)
Android A was Astro(from Astroboy) and Android B was Bender(from Futurama) before they got hit with legal issues and decided change the naming to desserts starting from Android C Cupcake and D Donut and the rest is history

That's the only solution to fragmentation.
Stop buying $600+ Android devices, this will hit the OEMs where it hurts: their wallet.
Once they realise they've lost +50% of their profits that's when something will happen.
Everyone literally has to buy an iPhone for one entire year, that's the quickest means.
...if that happens, even Google will change their carppy Pixel devices.
They will want their profits back, so they will invest a lot of money from their lucrative marketing departments back into their software/R&D department to ensure actual proper 2 year support. A side bonus would mean less gimmicks, cleaner software, better user interface, more consistency, intuitive, and lack of bugs.
But this requires people to be smart in buying their smartphones. And we have a sea of idiots, so all hope is lost. *Cue The Planet of the Apes ending "You Maniacs! You fools! You blew it up! DAMN YOU! God Damn you All To Hell" *

Android will always be fragmented. OEMs have literally zero incentive to update older phones. They make money by selling new phones. In fact, updating older phones cost them money with nothing in return.
So it's up to consumers to wise up. Instead of paying $800-$900 for an Android phone and hoping it to get updates like iOS, you can just get $300-$400 phones and just replace it every year. Then you have no update issue.

Maybe a new version every two years would help, many people can't see the difference between Lollipop, Marshmallow and Nougat, and Oreo is still a rarity.

Still no Oreo update for my Note8. If you see this chart it is in fact quite pathetic of how fragmentated Android is. For me Windows still is the best operating system. Project Treble should better be something good. I am also curious about the Nokia 1 with Android Go.

BTW the two are nothing aloke. Deep down Android is more like any other linux distro (with its own particularities of course) while iOS is following a sandbox like scheme where every app is a mini OS. The two couldn't be more different ... now or ever.

Google cant get rid of fragmentation unless they lock down android like ios which will cause.alot of critisim or they can seperate manufacturer UI from main android so google will push version updates and manufacturers will push skin update like if you have s8 google will push android p update after update s8 will boot either stock android until samsung pushes samsung experience 10 update or with older samsung experience9 but newer android p lacking features introduced in android p
