Kangal, 20 Mar 2018Yes, but the two go hand-in-hand. Apple likely manufactu... moreEventhough they gonna have excess inventory due to not selling much in the last quarter... Apple will NOT reduce the production dramatically... Reducing the production by big number, will ruin Apple image.

What Apple will do is doing a promotion, price reduction, or other kind of promotion to raise the device sales....

promotion....
something like... frree iphone if you buy house/car. Apple will sell perhaps at 40% or 50% of the price to car dealer.

Peter-B, 20 Mar 2018This is about how many they made, not how many they sell. P... moreYes, but the two go hand-in-hand.

Apple likely manufactured almost 60 Million units the first quarter, and expected to sell most of it. So the next quarter they would normally start manufacturing something close to 40 Million units.

The fact that Apple is going to only make 9 Million units means they've estimated that they have an excess stock, of let's say, 30 Million in inventory. That means Apple didn't sell very well the last quarter, at least in terms of the iPhone X. They possibly have sold between 10 - 30 Million units, which is a lot, but it's a failure compared to their previous launch-quarter figures. Hell the iPhone 6 had a figure of 75 Million it's first quarter, so compared to that, this performance is around 1/8 to 1/2 which is not good.

AnonD-1825, 20 Mar 2018You clearly don't understand what you read, of course Apple... moreMy mistake replace sales with manufactured and my comment still stands. They wouldn't manufacture 50 million Q1 and drop to 9 million Q2 that makes zero sense. Either they didn't manufacter anywhere near 50 million Q1 or the estimate in drop of sales for Q2 is way over the top.

Anonymous, 20 Mar 2018Lol no decent analyst would jump from selling 52.5 million ... moreAs an integer type of number. such a number does exist.
I do guess you refer to the "assumption" of selling 52.5m devices. TECHNICALLY. it's IS plausible to sell that amount considering apple's ad techniques. (and I am an android girl.) but perhaps that analyst went a wee bit TOO pessimistic.
Edit: Oh, hehe I understood now. they refer to MANUFACTURING amount. which is 9m according to that analyst. but selling will remain as 100m+

with that horrid notch. not surprised. AT ALL.

"One has to really wonder if the 52.5 million is just an imaginary number."

Well it definately isn't sales number like you think :)

Lol no decent analyst would jump from selling 52.5 million one quarter down to 9 million the next? One has to really wonder if the 52.5 million is just an imaginary number.
