So basically 2 TB is the actual limit for any phone (or other device) that claims to support anything over 32 GB, which was SDHC's limit; i.e. if the specifications state 64, 128, 256, etc. GB (micro)SD card limit they will work with cards up to 2 TB.

Yes, I can confirm there are lots of FAKE microsd cards (also fake sd cards and fake flash drives) that cost so low for the amount of storage they offer. I and a friend have been a victim once. THESE FAKE microsd cards really exist and are rampant in online sites (Amazon, eBay, etc). Some even find their way in retail stores in countries without strict enforcement of counterfeit products. Fake sd cards trick your phone or computer to display their fake rated capacities. Once you start filling them up with data however, the card gets corrupted even before you reach just 1/8th of the stated fake capacity. Once corrupted, you lose all stored data. You can format the fake sd card and try to use it again but the corruption will happen again each and every time, before you even get anywhere near 1/8th the fake capacity. It is because fake sd cards are really 4GB or 8GB cards with tampered software/firmware to trick your computer into believing they are 32GB, 64GB, 128GB, 256GB or even 512GB capacities. They are also usually class 2 or class 4 sd cards with very slow read/write speeds but are deceptively labeled as high speed class 10.
There are fake 32GB, 64GB, 128GB,256GB and 512GB microsd cards and they come in Samsung, Sandisk, Kingston and various other generic brands. Everyone reading here should Google about fake micro sd cards and how to test for true capacity. My suggestion when you buy an sd card is to fill it up with data up to its maximum rated capacity and check if the copied data are all readable. Kiwix offline encyclopedia ZIM files (file size = 20GB [all, english, no pics]) make for a nice test. Just copy the 20GB ZIM file to the sd card several times, renaming each one with a unique name each time until the sd card is filled up. Then you can test if any of the ZIM files copied to the sd card can be opened by the Kiwix app (downloadable from playstore) without problems or corruption.
These fake sd card sellers rely on the fact that many buyers will not test their bought micro sd cards and fill them up to maximum capacity from day one. Many naive buyers actually only realize they have a fake sd card once their cards fill up to around 1/8th the rated fake capacity. For some, that means a few months and for others, a few years (especially those buying 128gb cards that are actually tampered 16GB sd cards as it takes time for them to use up 16GB of their external storage data). Still others, never realize they have fake cards and just blame the corruption to 'manufacturing' or factory defect or old age (1-3 years use).

You more than likely unwittingly bought counterfeit Sandisk cards. They are rampantly being sold, even on reputable sites like Amazon. Genuine Sandisk cards are extremely reliable.

The reason manufacturers lists 256GB as maximum supported size is because it would be a lie to say they've tested a device with anything bigger when they didn't have anything bigger to test with. exFAT is a 64-bit file system, with a theoretical maximum of 128 Pebibyte. A unit so unused I'm guessing 99.9% reading this would have to look up how much it really is. :)

Welp, this SD card costs roughly the same as a new midrange phone. I think it's kinda overkill to have 400GB storage SD card. It would make more sense for an external HDD.
