Sunday debate: Classic 16:9 vs. Taller screen ratios

03 June 2018
The tall screens started as a trend, but is there good reason behind it or is everybody just blindly following it?

suicidal.orange, 04 Jun 2022I'm dreading my next phone "upgrade" - phone... moreUse Microsoft Surface Duo or go to the Mi Mix 2s 845 with actual 16:9 or Razer Phone 2 if not then maybe
Use Zenfone 6 or op7p or Xperia or Nubia 7 or 8 pro (20:9)these are not 16:9 but no teardrop MAD might 16:9 when using only one screen if you can but it surely is 4:3

I also wished they made newer 16:9 phones, unfortunately the latest phones with 16:9 only dates back to 2018, sony_xperia_xz2_premium, Razer phone 2 and Huawei mate 10 from end of 2017. Bought Mate 10 because of its screen ratio and also for that headphone jack.

only XZ2 premium and Razer phone comes with wireless charging though

I still dream of a larger phone (82mm or wider phablet, think of Nexus 6 or Mate 20 X).

Essentially Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 or newer, lots of RAM, alert slider (OnePlus/iphone style), 1440p 120Hz 16:9 or 18:9 flat (no round edges) screen that can extra dim.
I'd buy instantly for pretty much any price. I mean ok, $1500-2500 is what I'm thinking about, preferably on the lower side.

Anonymous, 29 Apr 2022I have a Huawei Mate 10. I just had to switch to a Samsung ... moreI wish I had purchased a Huawei Mate 20 X when I could have (for a reasonable price, not $2K for a 5 yr old phone). Still limping along with my Nexus 6, on it's 3rd (or maybe 4th) battery. I use it primarily for work, for Teams/Meet calls. I can't see squat in a presentation or on an Excel spreadsheet on any newer phone with a display less than 3 inches wide. Foldables are useless - too thick, heavy, fragile and expensive. My Nexus 6 weighs less than most 'normal' 20:6 flagships. And even the smallest tablets are too big . .

The screen size farce is just that - the surface AREA of these tall phones is LESS that many smaller, older ones, but they can claim a much 'bigger' size just by making it just a little bit taller. Same with TV sizes when they went from CRTs to flat screens - that 32" in the bedroom is the same height screen as the 20" tube it replaced and the 42" plasma's height is the same as the 31" CRT - and uses significantly MORE power than the tube. I'm not saying the newer technologies aren't better, but the size numbers are very misleading!

I'd love to have 16:9 ar thinner bezel flat display flagship phone best for single hand use.

I was looking for a cellphone with these requirements for the steam link:

              1.- Aspect ratio 16:9
              2.- Wifi 6
              3.- OLED screen

iPhone SE 2022 is the closest one; the only problem is it comes with an LCD screen

previously owned 2 redmi note 4 phones. Couldnt be happier. 16:9 aspect ratio, 150mm in lenght, reachable screen with small hands, weight distributed evenly, lightweight. But then at 2022 august i changed to samsung A33, because redmi note's batery swole and too much to repair an old phone 2017.
So this samsung A33 has great software and functionality, but the aspect 20:9 ratio gives me hand cramps since. 4-5 months to get used to phone is more than enough.

I have to hold this "pencil phone" like a "baguette" with 2 hands like a f***ing retard or use one hands pointer finger like an old person for precision because of weight distribution and not to drop it. Typing xonstantly mispelled, dont bothrr anymore.
Watching video sucks, because the height of video is only as much as phones width. Dont get me wrong, i think samsungs software is great, but overall experience suffers dramatically from this 21:9 aspect ratio. one day gonna throw it to the wall.
I dont get it, in these comments almost every opinion supports-16:9 over 20:9. But only Iphone SE 2022 maintains this ratio(specs very weak and pricy) in curently available phones.
So i ordered samsung s7 active(2016) and will invest in repair, replace battery and wait for decent phone in future.

P.S. Golden ratio is more 1.6 than 2.

                  #16:9 for life
                  #21:9 trash

I'm dreading my next phone "upgrade" - phones where half the screen is covered by a keyboard (I use landscape almost all the time) already hide way too much, even wider surely means less visible text and a keyboard that's too wide to type on. I'm on GSM Arena looking for old phones which are smaller as I fear my Fxtec which avoids this by having a proper keyboard will be too long to fit in my pocket, just like all the new phones. I might even get a dumbphone.

I'm still using a 4:3 monitor at home too - if I want to watch media I'll use my TV!

Jay Babu, 08 May 202116:9 is the best and I can manage with 18:9 as the last lim... moreI think the reason why their shifting to taller phones is that more and more people use social media like tiktok or instagram where landscape is not useful at all. And since around 60% of the people on that platform are old their just targeting them because they probably wont use youtube or play any games.

I picked up this thread looking for a nice new high end 16:9 phone. My Mate 10 has just drowned. I bought two when Samsung changed the Note to 18:5:9. It looks like I'll just have to buy another 2nd hand Mate 10. Width matters and folding phones are still far to clumsy to use. Manufacturers please listen we need high end 16:9 option for people who are not deceived by the marketing hype.

I have a Huawei Mate 10. I just had to switch to a Samsung S10 plus because AT&T dropped 3G. It saddens me every time I pick it up. Is there a company or anyone who upgrades the internals of older phones. I'm still hoping Sony brings back the Z Ultra but please lord not in 21:9. I also have a Mate 20X. It's also great because the notch can always be hidden.

16:9 screen is much more comfortable with bigger 16:9 video and wording in everything! I used 16:9 5.5" Android phone for around 2.5 years and it was good, then I switched to the iPhone 11 with 6.1" screen. Guess what, everything in this so called 6.1" screen is smaller! Videos in YouTube is smaller, wording in everything like web browsing is much smaller! I still keep the 5.5" android phone to watch YouTube at home, the iPhone becomes mainly for going out only! those tall phone number only look good on paper and make you want to buy it! 6.1" with 19.5:9 sounds much bigger right? Actually not, the 16:9 area is just around 5.2"!

16:9 was the best ratio cuz i can watch movies with wider screen no more black areas , also the content is less than what we see on 20:9 ratio , actually 20:9 is worst ratio , i hate it , unfortunately all brands follow taller design, in the past Xiaomi waz making "mi max phones" it was great to make a lot of things , at least one wide mobile every year will be great for me

I want a 6" 4:3 phone without bezels. I had an LG Flex, which is a quite wide phone, yet it was still hard to write on it in portrait mode, and in landscape the keyboard was to wide spread and you'd only see two lines of text above it. So really even at 16:9 the phone is too long. Nowadays aspects are horrendous, I don't even use the upper part of the screen as it is not comfortable at all, I wish my current Zenfone 6 would be 2/3 of its actual length and at least 5mm wider.

I have both, Mi Max 3 is 10% heavier (and I feel it), much more difficult to stick in my pocket, and less grippy in hand. Oh, and slightly narrower too... stupid ratio.

I have a Mate 10 (non pro) which is close to being perfect when it comes to size.
