Most of those on Nougat are those that have midrange phones from brands like Samsung and LG which will likely NEVER get updated to Oreo and will be stuck there forever unless you flash a custom ROM. The 12% using Oreo are the newer phones from 2018 and older flagship phones that have already been upgraded to Oreo.

Not that your OEM has let you on KitKat this whole time it would have mattered. Probably never even patched Stagefright.
And 5.1 is still used because of one important feature it natively supports: VoLTE. That is crucial, all the frosting Google added in other releases are nothing compared to that. As 2G and 3G networks get decommissioned, your phone must support VoLTE or you can't make phone calls. You can still make crummy Android 5.1 phones but someone, most likely in India, will still buy it because of VoLTE

I tried an Oreo device from my friend (updated Galaxy A8 2018). The only difference is battery life though.

Many people buy cheap phones.. which companies just forgets it.
Google only limits small amount of models on their beta os, mostly phones you do not want to be your daily phone.
Many people defending this behavior, saying ohh it still works. So they can escape scotch free from doing simple security fix.

i'm not surprised that 5.1 is still pretty well used. it's relatively old, but not old enough to be "ancient" and it runs everything you might need. meanwhile, KitKat has fallen out of support in some cases a while ago, hasn't it?

It would be a lot higher, if the update wasn't controlled by the phone service provider. It should be released globally on the model, and not some gets it faster because they bought it from another provider than their neighbors.

I have a jellybean device, and an ICS one XD
They do basic work just fine. And I grew attached to them to throw them away.
