Gionee faces bankruptcy after failing to pay suppliers

28 November 2018
Out of the CNY17 billion debt ($2.5B), 10B are to banks, 5B to suppliers and 2B to marketing agencies.

However, Gionee survived long because it offered value for money both in and outside of China. They were the Xiaomi of phones, without the Mi-services and fluff. They leveraged the economies of scale, and the free Android OS, and passed many of the savings to their consumers unlike other companies who either pocket the savings or waste/invest it on marketing.

It will be sad to see them go, just like it was sad to see LeeCo fall.
Now, both Samsung and Apple have raised their prices and OnePlus has joined them. There's less action going on in the true competitive segments. There still are billions of Asians, Africans, and South Americans without a decent Android phone.

Macbeth, 28 Nov 2018Eh, who cares about Gionee? I sure as hell don'tI do. I had a IUNI 4.7 inch phone (with its hardware copied from the Gionee Elife E7). The OV back camera was pretty amazing. It had a big sensor size, didn't apply too much noise reduction on photos and I was able to take a lot of great photos with it. Too bad it had a metal body and the mics were covered so videos were too quiet and people couldn't hear what I was saying when I was outdoors. I switched to a Xiaomi phone 1 year later and I really missed the camera (While not missing anything else).
I wish manufacturers would raise the sensor size instead of making it even smaller and feeding us crap like lower apertures would automatically make all photos better.

Joe Dickson, 29 Nov 2018It is billions of USD, the Chinese currency is not worthles... moreThe second main reason why USD and Euro has strong values is due to natural resources. Main reason is because of their economy. CN has limited resources that it can export- it even has to import ores necessary for steel from Malaysia and Philippines. Despite that, it is already the second largest economy in terms of GDP (plus CN is continually building connections throughout the world while US is destroying it's diplomatic connections). If, however, the South China Sea disputes are settled through diplomatic means and natural resources there like gas and oil are extracted to the benefits of SEA countries, it would change the current hierarchy of economic superpowers. Of course, the US does not like that because change means losing the top spot. And I'm almost certain US would rather go to all out war, (or would participate in a war in SEA just to destabilize SEA).

They don't exist outside Asia, so I want to know this:
Would people buy a Gionee over a Huawei/Oppo/Xiaomi?

Joe Dickson, 29 Nov 201817 billion divided by 7 is still billions of dollars. There is a major difference.
US, Brazil: 1 Billion = 1,000 millions in the rest of the world.
Rest of the world: 1 billion = 1,000,000 millions

I hope the designers of Gionee M series would go to an other company for them to make luxurious looking phones. Vertu like phones are a niche that should still exist.

Same goes for the double battery designs. Maybe they should team up with that startup to perfect Solid State Batteries.
