Once I had Huawei Mate 20X in my hand, I just simply stopped looking at any other model. Mate 20X was vastly superior to Mate 20 pro. Mate 20 pro was simply too "as-expected", too "one among many", and it did not excite me.

Before I had any hands-on experience with Huawei Mate 20X, the only other 2018 smartphone that really excited was Oppo Find X. I was primarily attracted to its form. Have you noticed its back with the slider down? I can't help but admiring its simplicity in conception and purity in its execution. Oppo is a company that will be doing great things in the future.

The smartphone today, as defined by how it is being used by people all over the world, is no longer the smartphone envisioned by Steve Jobs in 2007. We have moved on and smartphone has moved on, in a direction unforeseen by Steve Jobs of yesteryear, and not fully understood by the Tim Cooks of today.
For many of us, the smartphone is not primarily being used as a phone. It can be used for so many things on so many fronts in our life. Making phone calls is just one of the many "inconsequential" side benefits.
Smartphone is at the very center of the upcoming 5G revolution. We are moving from a network of computing devices (computers, tablets, smartphones, network switches, etc) to a network of 5G agents. The 5G agent can be an unmanned "New Retail" store, a running electric car being automatically charged on a "Smart" highway paved with solar-panels, a block of city infrastructure of any kind, etc. The future of smartphone will be further removed from being primarily a phone, the exact direction of this upcoming change depends largely on your local context, which will be different from country to country, from city to city even within the same country.
Almost in an accidental way, Huawei Mate 20X, as the first crossover device of this kind, best captures the spirit of our time: The Age of Smartphone 2.0.

Huawei Mate 20X is the best smartphone from Huawei, and the best smartphone among all the models from all the brands released in the past 6-7 years. It may lack the features of its peers, and there may be things that can be improved upon, etc. But such criticism misses the point entirely. More than any other models released in the recent time and more than any commentators from the tech press in recent years, Huawei Mate 20X best captures the spirit of today's smartphone, as follows:
A smartphone is not a phone!
Or more precisely:
A smartphone should not be perceived primarily as a phone.

I placed my ipad mini 4, Samsung Tab S2 8.0 and Huawei Mate 20X side by side on my desk. I immediately recognized that Huawei Mate 20X is in a special class by itself. I said to myself: "I am moving on, to a better place with better things."

I'll never go back to a sub 7" screen or a curved display.
Yeah the M20X could be improved upon. Huawei took a multi million dollar chance to design and produce a product that no one knew how it would sell. I think the gamble paid off.
I see the M30X to have everything and even the kitchen sink.
