FasterJonny, 06 Feb 2019why 21:9? well it's easy, when we get rid of front facing ... moreIncorrect.

A traditional 5.5" with huge bezels on top and bottom has roughly the same footprint as a phone with 5.99" screen in 18:9 and slimmer bezels, as well as a phone with 6,39" screen in 19.5:9 - roughly. Each step from 16:9 to 18:9 and finally 19.5:9 making the phone a bit taller and bit slimmer. Stretching this to 21:9 in the same footprint would not be possible, despite me choosing the biggest 5.5" i could find. Most others are at least 5mm shorter than the Pixel XL.

For comparison, Pixel XL vs Xiaomi Mi A2 and Xiaomi Mi Mix 3.
    https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?&idPhone2=9140&idPhone3=9378&idPhone1=8345

It's more likely that they're going for 21:9 because it actually is a ratio for movies. And not all these half way ones like 18:9 and 19.5:9 etc. Since they also make TVs, then perhaps we will see 21:9 models from them as well. One is allowed to hope for it anyways :-)

Also, according to some rumors the Sony XZ4 will likely have a slim top bezel. So a reverse of the previous Xiaomi Mix phones. This will add to they height of a already tall phone, so hopefully the rumor is incorrect.

Conclusion Sony is the first to whole-hearted care about the sealed-in battery safety and lifespan unlike those phone makers which blindly chasing bigger battery capacity.

Motion Eye was first Super Slow Motion cameras in smartphones,
Triluminos and X-Reality brought better picture quality.
Similar for S-Force Front Surround, which is a virtual 5-channel sound. Naming it "Virtual 5-channel sound" would be stupid...
Qnovo is a different technology and it's not Sony's name.

SONY is going all out again with XZ4. Flop-Hit-Flop-Hit, SONY is inconsistent with its Xperia lineup. Xperia XZ Premium top of the line place 1 holder throughout 2017. Xperia XZ2 Premium + XZ3 don't know what SONY was thinking with such poor design choices. Now Xperia XZ4. Hmmmmmmm. On paper XZ4 looks exceptional and perfect. I hope it really performs as good as it looks.

I think this is truly brilliant when you watching video/movie at any places you want and suddenly can playing the ToF games with wider landscape view fields, I think the tallest display ratio can be also better for those game with inscreen controller and for shooting game it has much more view fields.

Sony is the best at coming up with bombastic names for their hardware that mean nothing: Cinemawide, triluminos, qnovo, X-Reality, Motion Eye, S-Force Front Surround. It's hilarious at times.

But a laptop, desktop or a tablet is for doing way more than only watch videos. Reading ebooks, working on word, excel documents, reading/developing content on the web, creating content, programming. All these tasks are better off with a more square ratio than the current sharply rectangular one. So it's a bit inconvenient when the aspect ratio of a versatile productivity machine is skewed to one task and ignoring the others. As for the iPad, you do get a lot of Android tabs with 16:9 ratio as an option. And 16:9 (and possibly 21:9) work for phones because you hold them vertically to consume content /read websites/browse social media, and horizontally for videos. Try to consume content horizontally on a phone and you may realise what I am talking about. Just my experience.

The 4:3 ratio is the worst part of the device.
Many apps are developed for iPhone but not iPad .
Almost half screen remains black while video is being played.

21:9 works for TVs and may work for phones. But laptops, desktops and tablets should stick to 3:2, 4:3 or 16:10. Anything else is like doing productivity by looking through a letterbox.

Still, good on Sony to steer clear of notches, holes and curved corners.

Shanti Dope, 06 Feb 2019So it is our fault for seeing the great valuable benefits o... morethe dumb phones of the old days have most of the interaction in permanent physical buttons/keys, and then it has the puny screen on top for display purposes only, which makes the dimensions easy to handle. here we are talking about an all screen display and interface that can have interactive elements positioned on different parts of the screen including the top portion. i know there will be nav/assistive shortcuts and option to shrink the screen so you can reach for the ui elements that are unreachable, but then those are really not user-friendly in that assistive shortcuts can very well get in the way of the information being displayed and shrinking the screen defeats the purpose of having a big screen in the first place. you cannot compare this with dumb phones with physical keys from before, rather it would be more comparable to touchscreen dumbphones like the lg chocolate and a few music-centered nokia symbian devices, which in fact did not sell well because of their ergonomics. sony should have taken cue from those. i would say again that i really would like to see sony do well in this industry, but features like this and the 4k hdr screen from xperia xz premium won't really help it back to its feet. again, sony is no stranger to failures (i.e. betamax, mini-disc, etc) but this industry is currently in a literal cut-throat status and those who are not innovating will quickly be weeded out. this is just my opinion as i see it from my own usage of smartphones; i could be wrong and people may end up liking this aspect ratio anyway. however, as far as practicality is concerned, any kind of design innovations in this industry is measured by serving a purpose to a wide demographic, and this aspect ratio will only serve those who do not own widescreen tvs at home or enjoy watching movies in puny mobile screens.
