Is it just me or every single mobile GUI looks exactly the same? Just a bunch of icons with no sensible order and maybe a bar at the bottom.

There's no reason not to use galaxy 3 for development purpouses...after all Galaxy S i9000 and Samsung Wave I have the exact same hardware, but the smaller screen (same resolution!) and all metal body of Wave.

Sorry but MeeGo is quite alive! Nokia has sold 1,5 to 2milions of N9 with MeeGo while 3 Lumia with windws combined has sold 600 thousands units only!! This mean Nokia earns on MeeGo and loose on WP. Sad but true. Lets hope this will be the same with Tizen :)

Tizen is 100% MeeGo compatibile backwards, as it just contains full MeeGo. Diferences will start with html5 additions added to Tizen. We will see. If Samsung will prepare better MeeG/Tizen phone - I ll buy it. This is new standard in the market, and good one! I am looking forward to Tizen phone.

            MeeGo
            Main article: MeeGo

Strictly speaking, the Nokia N9 does not run MeeGo 1.2 as its operating system. It instead runs what Nokia refers to as a "MeeGo instance". During the development of Harmattan (previously marketed as Maemo 6), Nokia and Intel merged their open source projects into one new common project called MeeGo. Not to postpone the development schedule, Nokia decided to keep the "core" of Harmattan, such as middleware components (GStreamer) and packaging managers (the Harmattan system uses Debian packages instead of RPM packages). Nonetheless, Harmattan is designed to be fully API compatible with MeeGo 1.2 via Qt. As far as end users and application developers are concerned, the distinction between Harmattan and MeeGo 1.2 is minimal.[12] Since all marketing effort would have been directed to "MeeGo", Nokia dropped the Maemo branding to adopt MeeGo as to not confuse customers.[39]

The Nokia N9 user experience provides three panes, called Home, and a Lock Screen. Dragging or flicking horizontally navigates between the three panes of the home. [1] The Home consists of :

Events : It holds all the notification such as missed calls, upcoming meeting and unread messages/emails.
Applications : Menu with all the installed application shortcut. It displays 4 columns that can be scrolled up and down as needed by the number of application.
Open Applications : A task manager that can be viewed either as a 2 columns or 3 columns (a pinch gesture will switch between each mode). If more application are open that can be displayed on the screen, the user can scroll the open applications list up and down.

When in an application a swipe gesture from one edge of the screen to the other one will return the user to one of the three views of Home. This will not close the application, it will either be suspended or keep running in the background, depending on the application. To close an application, the user must press and hold until a red "X" appears on the upper left corner of the application thumbnail in the Open Application view, which will allow to close it. You may also close apps by swiping from the top of the device and down while in the application, if enabled via settings. Clicking on the status bar on the top of the screen while using an application or on the Lock Screen, will display a menu allowing the user to adjust the volume, change the active profile (airplane mode, silent, etc...) and turn off the bluetooth, WiFI, 3G and 2G radio. The Lock Screen display the status bar, a clock and some notifications. This screen also holds music controls (introduced in PR 1.1) when the music player is active. It is customizable by the end user.

The phone can be unlocked by double clicking on the screen. Sliding the lock screen up reveals 4 shortcuts, called the Quick Launcher. The Quick Launcher can also be accessed while using an application.[40]

N9 is maemo6, is that unclear enough guys??

                A lot of confusion here.
Nokia did not use the "default" MeeGo UI.
It was up to any manufactor using MeeGo to use their on UI. But there was the default UI, which had some ugly figures on the background...

So when people say that Samsung/Intel should look at N9, they are right.
But when they talk about the UI of MeeGo, they are wrong.

I wasnt totally sold on the N9 UI. just 3 screens... Sure, I get it, to make it userfriendly without buttons, it was a good choice.
But If you want to sort widgets (of which there were none) and programs, by occasions, it wasnt that good.
Now they added folder support, and thats a good move, but still not really enough for me.

N9 isn't Meego - it's Harmattan. Nokia was making Harmattan API-compatible with Meego so they could slide into it as it matured - but Harmattan development started before the Meego partnership. So none of the 'innovative' N9 software is actually in Meego, nor has it ever been.

Mobilemaster, 09 Jan 2012Honestly, I want to see a Tizen Samsung! It's sad that Meeg... moreBADA is already the most sucessfull OS ! It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of Android, but Bada NEVER freezes, lags or suffer from spyware or spamware.

Android freezes, lags and suffers from google spyware and spamware. It also is extremely battery hungry and requires a fast cpu to operate efficiently.

This could actually tie up with Windows phone's METRO UI for the most ugly look. IOS and Harmattan UI still looks the best and elegant of them all.
