28 April 2019
Judging by the comments, front-facing cameras are used more for video calling and face unlock than taking selfies.

I wonder what the result would be if GSMArena re-run this particular poll in 2021.

If some manufactuer had balls to remove the selfie camera alltogether, I'd probably honestly consider buying it. Waste of display space and resources for people like me who don't take selfies at all. Haven't made a single video call with my phone ever, either.

Fullscreen without any cheeky pop-up mechanisms (so it can get IP rating) would be great.

If they would release the S10+ without the silly selfie camera, I'd buy it right now..

Selfie camera is for idiots and self centered "children". Why the hell you would take 1million+ selfies? People pleas get a life. WTF? Selfies? Realy? This is the biggest problem in the world right now? OMG... Usualy people with selfie needs are the ones that are cheep when buying phones so no need for high end devices to have this crap. Selfie camera should be an optional...

Does anybody have a right mind here on GSM Arena team?
The result is in favor of rear camera off course, Sir!!

But that doesn't mean front camera gets LITTLE LOVE, unless you're foolish enough not to know the difference between polling of:
1 Rear Vs Front camera; or
2 Rear with NO front Cam Vs Phone with both rear & front Camera.

Do the 2nd Poll and tell me again front camera gets little love!!

Anonymous, 28 Apr 2019Wrong. Massive expense and complexity in that approach. Mor... moreMassive expense in complexity? An AMOLED screen is not complex in terms of manufacturing and assembly and the fact is that, AMOLED is already known to be much cheaper than an LCD screen so they're not that much expense to manufacture.
On the topic on breakage due to fall, how would you think a pop-up camera protect itself when extended during a fall? A case would never be able to protect a mechanical feature that were already extended. A rear screen can be protected by a tempered glass and a rubber jelly case.
Longevity-wise: On a well taken cared phone, a mechanical pop-out camera will break earlier than a rear screen. A phone with rear screen can also be made to comply with Ingress Protection (IP) while mechanicals could never do that.
Battery-wise: lol, haven't you seen and teardown with nubia X or Vivo Nex Dual Display? The rear screen doesn't even compromise battery-space, mechanical pop-out does.

You mindset towards phones where "people only keep theirs for at most two years" is the one that makes manufacturers to implement planned obsolescence and still get-away with it.
Remember that there's a phone with a rear that costs almost 500USD to replace (if broken), if I have a phone with a rear part that costs like that, it better have other functionality other than being fragile and shiny.

                    Conclusion:
Mechanical complexity is always weaker implementation and would still break even when taken with utmost care, it even have a finite limit of how many times it can pop-out. So a rear display is always better than any mechanical pop-out implementation.

Front cam has more uses than just selfie, for example, video calling.

This poll is fraudulent because both is not an option.

Samsugn a80 cam module is the way forward to use a single camera for both front and back purposes.

I do use the front camera for selfies, video recording and videocalls. But i mostly use the rear cameras. So we do need both cameras, if you really hate the front camera, just buy a phone like the A80, no selfie cam because it moves the camera to the front.

I use the rear camera for selfie, Smile shutter takes the photo quite nice. I use video call too but not often. I use mirror too but very seldom.

Brands should long have recognised that the only people that care for selfish camera are between 10-16yo and those who watch Kardashians!
