Counterclockwise: the quest for the all screen front in numbers

It's been two years since the last article on tracking Screen-to-body ratios and phone designs have gotten decidedly kooky since.

6.0" screen size, Compact enough to be compared with 5.2" G2 back then :)

Meh. The Samsung might have thinner side bezels but it still has that ugly punch-hole camera. I wouldn't mind thicker side bezels than getting Samsung's atrocious punch-hole devices.

It bulging out from the side doesn't mean you can discount it. That's why they keep calculating their screen with higher STB. I know it call screen-to-body ratio for a reason. But, seriously do we really just calculate the screen? From what I see we calculate the front view of phone regardless if the bezel actually thicker when viewed from the side elevation; curved screen for example.

If I wanted to use iphone, I would buy 8+. Because of home button.
If I can just click a button, why would I do swipe left/swipe right/ swipe up/swipe down?

I doubt google would do this if iphones still had home button.

Even without bezel, s10+ would still be more than 15cm.

When you change to 18:9, 19:9 and 21:9 but keep same diagonal the screen gets smaller but taller.

                  6" 16:9 = 99,2 cm2
                  6" 18:9 = 92.9 cm2
                  6" 21:9 = 84.1 cm2

I remember doing swipe for back or home on the Sharp Aquos Crystal. One of the pioneers released in 2014 for this bezel-less trend. It was a nightmare to use. As bad as Samsung's curved displays.

There are people who still swipe to text even with the Swype Keyboard now defunct. Android 10's new side swipe to go back is going to really conflict with that. I believe Quiche will be so unpopular, Google will bring back the back button in a future firmware no later than Android R.

This bezel-less trend is a marketing ploy to brainwash consumers into thinking they're are actually useful.

Anonymous, 02 Jun 2019I think most companies use the whole bezel-less craze as a ... moreYeah, people prefer tablets. I always believed that. Traditional tablets you cannot take with so they are collecting dust at home, those new tablets though are both pocketable and expansive enough for some semi serious computing.

If anything screen will Gert bigger. With foldable we will top 10 inches in pocketable equip!ent. I can't imagine we would go much higher than that as it is the size of a book. So we will top at 10-11 inches and remain stagnant for decades.

Tablets were the end goal all along. Jobs was right to say that tablets will replace all computing (including phones and laptops eventually), he was just a few decades premature to call the death of the rest.

So yeah, people clearly prefer tablets over anything else. They call them phones, but let us not kid ourselves, in any other era a 7 inches would be called an e-reader or more recently a tablet (for example kindle fire). They 'd eventually creep up to full tablet size and what we now call tablets would become enterprise grade PCs (13-17inchers with powerful compute hardware integrated)

                                Yeah, 100% equal ......

Pie is going to be the last great Android version. Pie will be the last to offer a back button. I say this knowing side swipes to go back will be annoying. Go pinch to zoom a photo. Then move it around. It will accidentally trigger the back buttons. Or try playing games especially ones in portrait mode.

I used All-In-One Gesture app for over two years. The side swiping to go back or home got annoying. I even had to get rid of Lazy Swipe because they would conflict. And now that we will nearly no bezels with our phones, it will only get worse. Once Quiche arrives, many people will eventually miss that back button.

All of this is just stop gap until someone puts a camera behind the display or has the courage to dump the front selfie came all together. I would by it in a heart beat if the dropped the front camera and instead sealed it up for IP rating, super thin, SD card, stereo speakers, all bands, 5G, UDFS file format, etc.

What companies dont tell people is the fact that % increases with bigger screen, even if you keep same bezels.

For example A has 6" and A+ has 6.5" ..... Both have same bezels.
The % on A+ will be higher.

Dual edge screen increases % too compared to flat screen.
