MediaTek announces Helio G80 gaming-focused mid-range chipset

03 February 2020
The G80 looks identical to the G70 but with higher clock speeds.

I have my doubts about those MediaTek G series and P series chips. They are not much better than the MediaTek chips of yesteryear, in terms of general performance, power efficiency, etc. It is the Dimensity series that make MediaTek the darling of many phone-markers for 2020. MediaTek should put more effort on releasing more Dimensity series chips, such as D800+, D1000+, D1100, D700, etc.

Another good gaming chipset by Mediatek. I guess a smartphone with it would cost around 10k to 12k.

Zero, 03 Feb 2020Indeed, this should be the Helio G70T. An Helio G80 shou... moreG77mp3 doesn't exist
      It's G57mp3.
Cores are more or less the same.
      G57 goes from mp1 to mp6
      G77 goes from mp7 to mp16

G57/G77's architecture is different from G76...
      G76's core uses 3 execution units/clusters of 8 lanes...for a total or 24 lanes per core
G57/G77's uses 2 clusters of 16 lanes for a total of 32 lanes per core.
G57mp3 is as powerfull as G76mp4

G72's uses 3 execution units of only 4 lanes...
G76mp4 is as powerfull as G72mp8

      And there's a crazy thing.
      G52's uses 2 execution units of...8 lanes like G76, not G72
For a total of 16 lanes per core when G72 has only 12!
Yes it's crazy, but it's true (you can go on ARM's website to check)
G52mp2 is nearly as powerfull as G72mp3.

Nevertheless, even if I often defend Mediatek, I really can't on G70/G80...
First, G70 is more or less a P65!
Second, G80 is only on overclocked version of G70.
No more power over P60, P65, P70...this is not gaming soc.
      These new names are only...names.

Dimensity (1000, 1000L, 800) seems to be the real new soc...I hope they will find many customers

Anonymous08082019, 03 Feb 2020Should have been named Helio G70T instead of Helio G80Indeed, this should be the Helio G70T.

            An Helio G80 should be:
            - 2X ARM A76 @1.6Ghz
            - 6X ARM A55 @1.6Ghz
            - Mali G77 MP3 @900 Mhz

The sucessor of the Helio P70.

Not as big of a difference as the difference in number suggests.
They shouldn't be sharing the same exact GPU as the G70, for it needs to be even more powerful - something along the level of SD730 since the G90's GPU is more powerful than the SD730G.

Should have been named Helio G70T instead of Helio G80

The true Helio G80 could be a cut version of the G90.

I'm expecting for dimensity 1000 devices, but they simply releasing g series SoC. Don't bring any new SoC. Plz make current SoC publicity.mediatek.
