Apple won't be using BOE OLEDs at least for the first batch of iPhone 12

I was talking about the GPU power needed to render 4K scenes. It doesn't matter how crisp (or not) the panel is, the hardware still needs to process ~4 times more pixels, when compared to 1080p, and ~8 times more pixels, when compared to 720p.

Also, even upscaling 3D graphics requires processing power, for an image quality which doesn't compare to the native resolution.

Also, 4k on a pentyle panel (blurry by definition) is more like a QHD full RGB screen, not that overkill in fine.

Yeah, if you look at the overall scores ONLY they are similar to each other. However, iPhone 11 Pro lasted roughly 4 hours and 20 minutes longer in the browsing test and 4 hours longer in the video playback. This suggests that Xperia 1 tried hard to make up for those unimpressive subscores by longer call time score and (presumably) lower stand-by power consumption, but if you're a type of person who browses web all the time and likes to consume media on your phone, iPhone will give you a much better battery life.

"such brightness was already enough to be visible"
"give a warning before letting users bypass the threshold limit"
I would've agreed with you if it was 2 years ago when I was solely using Mate 10 Pro, but now I have S10 and P30 and side by side and 630 nits max brightness of P30's display simply doesn't feel bright enough outside compared to S10. That's not to say it's unusably dim or anything, but I find extra 200 nits boost definitely helpful especially when looking at a viewfinder on the camera app. Also, from what I see on my S10, when the adoptive brightness is turned on, it straight up ignores the position of the slider and boosts up the brightness whenever it detects harsh lighting environments. Honestly, I don't understand why Samsung still keeps the brightness warning when the max manual brightness is like only 400 nits.

"S20 Ultra is already experiencing green tint problems in just under a year"
That was largely a software issue and has been fixed already, and if one still experiences it then that's just a defective unit which doesn't represent the general quality of the panel that Samsung uses. Either way, it's absolutely nothing to do with the burn in.

"how many contents are you going to see that can utilize this feature anyway?"
Most apps that involve scrolling (Browsers, Facebook, Reddit, Twitter etc.) already take an advantage of 120Hz refresh rate. With introductions of many gaming phones that feature 90Hz+ panels, more and more mobile games are becoming optimised for high refresh rate screen too. Newer Oppo/OnePlus phones even use the dedicated processing chips to upscale lower frame rate video to 60fps/120fps in real time in compatible apps. How many, you asked? I dunno, maybe hundreds of thousand apps or even millions apps?

"That comparison alone made the iPhone's screen look so cheap and mediocre"
Not really, how come you think so? The most of the Youtube videos I watch in my daily life are rendered in 16:9 or 18:9 aspect ratios and I barely watch any movies on my phone, so 21:9 display doesn't really speak to my heart. I didn't appreciate Xperia's extra colour saturation at 7:45 mark in the comparison either (Though I believe there is a toggle to turn that down).

"we are talking about super premi devices already"
Don't you think it's really unfair that you're treating 4K resolution as some sort of holy grail while heavily undermining the value of higher refresh rate and extra brightness? Are you confident that you won't defend Sony just in case they put those features on their next flagship? Because I know for sure I will criticise any phones that uses power hungry 4K display regardless of brands (unless they comes up with MicroLED technology and manages to reduce the power consumption drastically from OLED/LCD, but that won't happen for at least next 2 years).

"Just because green pixels are twice as large"
I said THE NUMBER OF green pixels is twice as large, but yeah I admit I should've said "twice as many" so that you wouldn't have got confused. It doesn't really change the fact that Pentile WQHD+ is comparable to RGB FHD in terms of effective resolution though (so it's definitely not worse), since the numbers of R and B are the same between those two.

So what about the sharpness difference you saw in real life when comparing those two displays, you may be wondering.. I think I've got an idea. Pentile, due to the nature of its subpixel arrangement, exhibits anti-aliasing effect that makes curved lines slightly smoother, and you probably mistook it as a softer image rendered in lower resolution. Take a look at this image to see what I mean, it shows iPhone X's 1260p OLED and iPhone 8+'s FHD IPS panels, and notice that iPhone X shows less jagginess around the curved corners of the icon.

Shanti Dope, 13 Jun 2020Speaking of screens, I simply don't understand why manufact... moreIn the case of mobile gaming, 4K puts a heavy strain on the SoC. It needs to render ~4 times as many pixels, when compared to 1080p. Not even consoles were able to do that, until just a few years ago (and even then, some resorted to tricks like checkered rendering, to ease the burden on the hardware).

And reducing the resolution to 1080p is not an option, because the content looks washed out if you don't use the panel's native resolution.

However, I'm sure that all flagships will get there, EVENTUALLY. It's just not feasable yet, for various reasons (battery consumption, refresh rate, cost, etc.). Manufacturers would love to offer the very latest and greatest. But the very low adoption of 4K mobile screens is happening for a reason, it's not like they are dismissing such panels out of ignorance or some evil plan to keep people on „low quality“ screens.

I'm sure that, once everything is settled down (chips capable of running high graphics 4K games, higher refresh rates, battery optimizations, reduced costs, etc.), UHD will become the norm.

There's just one problem… Then, everyone will scream for mobiles with 8K screens!!!

The 80/20 split will not be at launch when all of the reviews are done and everyone says how great the displays are. The consumers who purchase in later batches will be buying based on reviews, but their displays haven't been reviewed. I think this has happened before with Apple as well with the A9 resulting in a nearly 2 hour difference in battery life between suppliers. These things matter.

Samsung sold 2 million units of Galaxy S10+ and S10e during last year's Q1, whereas Sony Mobile managed to ship less than 4 million units for their entire phone lineup within the whole 2019. You're trying to employ a typical "There are so many people using their iPhones with a broken display so iPhone must be fragile" argument and obviously this wouldn't work unless two companies have comparable sales figures.

"Nokia 9 has almost 6.000 sunlight contrast (no longer provided by gsmarena reviews) despite having much lower brightness than other phones"
Yeah, and? Is there any numbers that suggest that Xperia 1/Mk. II have an exceptionally good sunlight contrast ratio like Nokia 9 does? High end Galaxy phones, on the other hand, used to occupy near the top of the chart when GSMArena was still carrying out a test on it.

"Brightness level is chosen by the OEM"
I know. And if they are setting the brightness of the panel higher, it means that they are confident enough about the display quality that doing so wouldn't severely affect the battery life or increase the risk of burn-in in a long run.
Then this goes back to my earlier comment about why P40 Pro+ equipped with Samsung-made panel goes so much brighter than the regular Pro with lower grade BOE panel (which they shouldn't have used on their premium lineup IMO). If they set the peak brightness the same on both variants, in real life scenario the latter would probably suffer from much faster pixel wear-out rate or higher power consumption compared to the former.. in the worst case, both.

Sometimes it is so small people do not see it.

It is easy to find comments at xda, reddit and support page of phone makers website about burn in.

Outdoor visibility is not 100% about brightness. Nokia 9 has almost 6.000 sunlight contrast (no longer provided by gsmarena reviews) despite having much lower brightness than other phones.

OEMs that push oled to 800-900 do not care if your screen will last much or not.
They earn tons of money replacing screen if warranty is over.

Brightness level is chosen by the OEM. It has nothing to do with being new or older oled as some other users think.
