8K is not necessary at all. But good for 360° videos and 4k HDR ones. In how many years do you guys think this codec will become the standard? 4-5 years?

        But it doesn't matter as everything will have a videoblock encoder/decoder just like HEVC has.
        Only people I know that do transcode on CPU are rippers.

            Anonymous, 06 Jul 2020Is it better than AV1?It depends. 50% as an average case, worst case or best case? AV1 is said to be 20-30% more efficient than HEVC. AV1 has already been adopted by many, and if VVC doesn't produce significantly better results than AV1, it's gonna die, since AV1 is royalty free. I personally wish VVC rots in some corner.

              I remember close to 10yrs ago i was at some IT Expo and there were three dudes that had audio compression to rival MP3. They could comoress whole album at 128kbs and it came out at around 3MB all together. I've never seen them or heard for them ever again.

                    Wonder from what % it counts as magic. AI to pack, AI to unpack, upscale and leave something for brain to paste together, it feels already magical.
                    Original quality will be long forgotten but internet servers will survive the pressure of corona homebies.
                    Now just to be 8K ready at home.
