I'm saying this as someone who plays football AND games on a mobile phone AND spends time with his girlfriend. And I work as well. The real reason you are buying an ROG Phone is of course, mobile gaming, and if this is not why you are getting one, stay away from it.
The benefit of iPhone over ROG Phone is definitely not gaming performance. You better buy an iPhone for taking pictures and videos, using its ecosystem features (Apple Pay) and apps you can't or otherwise not as effective in Android.
ROG Phone offers superior gaming performance due to its passive and active cooling (iPhones even lack nearly all passive cooling, thus throttling somewhat quickly despite powerful CPU/GPU). You have that 120Hz OLED panel with low response time and gaming accessories.
And we know that less people buy a phone intended for mobile gaming. The market target of ROG Phones are very specific: gamers.

Keep in mind that in terms of smartphones, I only had iPhones, until I got my ROG 2 last fall. I can say that for me, 4 things were important: price below equivalent of $800, headphone jack, long battery life, and customization. The price became too high long ago and I certainly won't settle for those iPhone 4s knock-offs called SE, the jack disappeared with the iPhone 7, the battery life is indeed much better on iPhone 11 but by then I had chosen a phone, and customization has been steadily dying since jailbreak started to disappear as well. Oh and it might seem stupid, but not having that huge notch and instead a small bezel is so much better.
I also learned to appreciate many things on the ROG 2, such as high refresh rates, high quality stereo speakers, faster charging despite using only an 18W charger, air triggers, much better heat dissipation.
Is it superior for everyone? No, there's many who can't live without waterproofing, Apple ecosystem, and better cameras (sometimes, my father owns an 11 and it doesn't do miracles). But for me, it is definitely superior. Hope that answers your question, and this does not take away from the fact that obviously iPhones are more suited for the needs of way more people.
