You can't take UWA shots or zoom into the subjects with minimal loss of quality on a single camera Pixel 4a no matter how you use it. It shouldn't be hard to understand, really.

JDK, 12 Nov 2020see? you just proved that DxO cares too much about camera s... moreUh are you high? Or rather, do you even know how Dxomark scores the phones and what is a telephoto camera?
DXOmark scoring system includes ultrawide cameras (which pixel 4a does not have and an ultrawide camera can never be replicated by software) since most midrange and flagships have an ultrawide nowadays. And the absence of a Tele camera means Pixel 4a will have a worse zoom quality than a phone with tele camera because the camera software cannot make up for the lack of the hardware.
Mate 20X not only uses camera software for its zoomed pics, but also a 3x telephoto sensor, while Pixel 4a has to rely on its camera software. There is only so much computational photography can do. Also Mate 20X's Dxomark score is not updated yet while the Pixel 4a's is. If anything, we should be surprised at how Pixel 4a managed to get such a high score with a single old af camera sensor .

Course Exynos S20 will only be able to run older versions of Gcam unlike the Snapdragon versions. Also, on phones like Mi 10 Ultra, Note 20, they rely heavily on their superior camera hardware to offset their weaker camera software. Just look how high the Pixel 5 scored on Dxomark with a rather old camera sensor or YouTube camera comparisons.

I guess this statement suits better the phones with a weaker camera. For example, on Xiaomi mi 9 GCam improved the night pictures.

If y... moreTbh, Google has the best image processing software on phones, I mean, just install Gcam on your phone and the image quality will improve so much (they are in a dire need of a new camera sensor tho, even Apple moved on to new ones). Apple and Samsung are just behind. Huawei's image processing is good but the competition has caught up over the years.
Xiaomi pretty much has a shit camera software (coming from a Mi 9 user). They really need to fix their photo colours (overexposure) and their effing night mode.

If you ask me, they need to address more to the software part. Google and Apple still produce good quality using old sensors.

I still mourn the loss of the telephoto sensor on the latest Google Pixel phones. Give me the choice between an ultrawide or a telephoto camera for a dual-camera setup, I'll take the latter all day. Ultrawide is not that important enough for me since the primary wide is already good enough, but having to do true digital zooming is a big no-no!

The score is very good for a single camera phone. But for a small and old sensor it has some drawbacks. Not to mention for a single sensor.
Compare this review with those on cars, more space, better design, faster, more economical, large trunk etc, higher the final score.
But to see all this you have to READ the damn review and see the pictures and videos, sometimes hundreds. Also you can compare them to better phones to see the differences.

Think of DXO as a tool which can always be misused by people and an excellent one when used by the ones who knows how to use it. If people actually tried to read the DXO's breakdowns akin to a tool's user manual then it's not that hard to understand how to use it. But the problem is that people liked to be spoonfed so they only looked at the final score. It's not that the data were being witheld, it's open for the public to read. If you want to compare only the main cam? Then read only the main cam of a multicamera system. How hard was it? Does reading and comprehension really hurts that bad? (This is not directed towards you BTW so don't get too personal about my statement) lol.
