People care about fitness metrics on a watch because it's very "Star-Trecky" technology.
If it's just a gimmick or pure guestimations, I would say yes. But it's the step towards having an accurate technology sometime in the future on the palm of our hand.
They have to start with gimmick products first in order to achieve that. It's the price of a gimmicky product that is somehow disturbing but.... in the name of the progress !!!
