This will turn into another AT&T fiasco with carriers blaming handsets for loss of signal.

As time goes on things will improve further, just ask Qualcomm.

While I welcome this (I believe 4G is why O2 and Vodafone are going to start sharing masts), are we now going to get the ridiculous American-style situation with loads of stripped-down variants of popular phones with lots of letters after their names which only work with certain carriers? No wonder other countries have been reluctant to follow suit, it'll be a nightmare.

From what I have read Apple do NOT have any 4G LTE patents, so can't release the IP5 that has LTE
I went into an EE shop and the sales person was really chuffed that EE has the first 4G service, and almost guarenteed that the IP5 would have LTE
Samsung have stated they will SUE Apple if LTE is incorporated in
