Flashback: the Samsung Galaxy Beam put a cinema in your pocket with its built-in projector

04 June 2021
It could project an image up to 50" in size - it will be a while before foldable and rollable phones achieve that while remaining pocketable.

I honestly would buy one today if it had solid battery from 3800 mah to 4500,a solid processor SDD 735G or more,The camera dosent need to be great, and that the projector quality is FHD or better all at a mid range price 400-550$ It also dosent have to be a slim size but if they make it thicker they should add a better battery than a normal phone would have

I would love to buy one with modern spec and a better projector.

I really loved the galaxy beam, I don't understand why they discontinued that line.

Blackview had a projector laser phone in 2019, but don't know now.

I'll tell you the issues. I used to follow head mounted and micro projector technology. I wanted to do a product myself, but got scared about the laser power levels, and I was right. I had a discussion with the laser show industry laser projection FAQ maintainer about how the levels were too high, and then the government did a shocking research study that put the display limit very low, hence the 25 lumen or so dull laser projectors. The show industry has been scanning audiences and putting holes in the vision of some people, without them realising, as the mind maps the holes out of your vision. I got hit by a 27 lumen projector accidentally through a lens, and it cooked the eye gel just above my retina surface There are people more susceptible to damage. Part of this is the pulse (if only they had considered how a surgical laser works) and the aperture of the beaming device, where if you put up closer to your eye, somebody could fire extra concentrated light in, over a smaller area,. The side of a thin phone is just not wide enough. They then try to stick you with low resolutions. The company often used, uses a vibrating mirror that scans a pixel across the projection surface. It's in the two Nintendo virtual boys I've got from decades ago. Even though all the issues mentioned so far are addressible in my own design variations from a long time ago, which others have picked up too (change the nature of the light to less in-phase, keep an large aperture shooting window to reduce harm, and other special sauces and higher resolution versions) they haven't. All they have done is pseudo fullhd mode).

Now, the reality, is that it's a super cheap technology in mass production, that should be on $200 phones. But they try to upmarket the price of the low resolution technology feature, limiting sales and manufacturing volume they need to keep the price down. But, I knew a head mounted display technology provider working on 32k chips years ago, who already had 16k coming, and 8k. Using the sorts of technology spoke about here to massively boost the brightness (and non laser source, like a led fed quantum dot colour filtered source) and 12 bit colour, 4k, 4:4:4 they could get a descent beamer. But nobody should delude themselves, it's still for dim light, and not for bright outside light, and still stay safe. I've been looking at an solution to extend brightness even further like a normal projector.

Without the extra resolution and brightness while maintaining at least, near rec2020 coverage (and to a lesser degree 12 bit+ for wide area toning) it's going remain a sideline feature. There even are ways to possibly, have a second larger device the beamer can project on, which then pumps out an amplified version for larger brighter rooms. That's a better personal home theatre or gaming angle.

A friend of mine got a demo of free floating holograms. They dissapeared into America, then the military announced they were going to have battlefield holograms. Another person I know was approached at the time to do optical processors for release around two decades ago. But he was unlikely to be of the mindset to full exploit that technology, even though he was a leading person in an unrelated chip field. I wanted to do optical processors myself, but a lot to learn to ship fields.

At one stage, there was an expectation that hologram projections were 'right around the corner', sadly, that was not to be the case. Maybe in the (far) distant future.

They aren't afraid to try out new ideas and concepts. But then again, both LG and general average consumers are to be blamed. LG didn't sell their phones to more countries while general average consumers sticking too much to Chinese phones and didn't have any interest whatsoever to try out new things. You see a similar situation with popular YouTubers and influencers as well. To find someone with true enthusiasm like Juan Bagnell, TK Bay, and Flossy Carter to name just three is almost impossible.

Most people, including popular YouTube influencers, would call it gimmicky, and yet they praise cheap boring-looking Chinese phones with a flagship chipset that looks pretty much the same as all the other 780942173129 million phones. That is why I'm now eyeing to buy both the LG V60 with its DualScreen case and also the LG Wing. There won't definitely be phones like them anymore.
