04 July 2021
The Backflip earned its name and its place in history thanks to the unusual way that Moto designed this clamshell - inside out.

YUKI93, 05 Jul 2021I definitely would love to see a modern-day interpretation ... moreMan, I would be up for a modern day refresh of the Flipout.
Square small phone that swivels to reveal a QWERTY keyboard. Make it capacitive like latter day blackberries so you can scroll without obscuring the tiny screen.

Not a daily driver, but fun when you're just going to be messaging people anyway, like festivals or a night out.

Anonymous, 05 Jul 2021Lmao. The profit is there with the iphone minis. Like what ... moreThe iPhone mini probably sell better than all Android phone manufacturers in "others" category combine. And Apple still makes good profit with it.

But, like I said, because precisely it was not as good as they projected. If the sales of their product does not meet the shareholders' desire, they won't continue to make that product for long.

Profit only is not enough. Thr profit needs to be good enough so that it gives them the reason to continue. Because why they waste their resources on a product, when they can focus on a more premium one, that can bring them even more profit?

If you want to refute me, then please tell me why they cut down production of the mini?

Back in the day, I wanted the Motorola FlipOut!
I have owned a few Motorola G series (as secondary/spare phones) up to now, but tbh I still want this one and the Motorola XT720.

I have used this phone and I just loved the whole concept of this. Extremely innovative Motorola was back then.

the days we were all so excited when new phones were coming out as they all had distinct design languages and quirks. thank god we have entered again the age of exploration with foldables and rollables: was getting tired of bricks looking like each other year after year.

I have the X Force and the Z2 Force and then another X Force that I bought in a sale and TBH they are some of the best phones I've used. G60 is really a good phone by moto. The lack of retail store doesn't matter much though as most people buy from Flipkart

YUKI93, 05 Jul 2021I definitely would love to see a modern-day interpretation ... moreGood luck. We have mass consumers complaining how phone market was stagnant but will mock on anything different like Blackberries, LG dual screens and others with qwerty pads.

You just slap on some high end sounding specs like 108mp cam, amoled 120hz refresh, beeeg battery and the tray-sized thing sells. Never mind some compromises were made on other parts like a bad display or something else.

Kingslayer, 04 Jul 2021Can we start making phones small again? There is a recent s... moreI personally don't like 6.5"+ large-screen smartphones because they are way too big for my hands. Even my relatively large pants can't keep the phone inside the pocket. That is why I'm now only eyeing compact smartphones like the ASUS Zenfone 8 and the Apple iPhone 12 mini to name just two.

I definitely would love to see a modern-day interpretation of this crazy smartphone with the latest Snapdragon 6xx or 7xx chipset and bigger screen between 5.7" to 6.3" alongside a bigger battery. I'm still all in for the physical QWERTY keyboard. If Motorola made a QWERTY keyboard counterpart of the Edge S aka Moto G100, that would be sweet.

The Z2 Force is remarkable because of its innovative modular eco system and I am still using the compact projector and speaker mods. When people come across the mods that I have, they are awestruck and wondering if they can have one for their phone as well. Motorola should have aggressively priced the mods but they didn't and it seems like a missed opportunity. Thier recent budget phones like Moto G60 and Moto G 5g are really good. All they need is a big offline retail network in countries like India to boost their sales which is currently limited to Flipkart in India.

Anonymous, 05 Jul 2021It's a niche product, it'll never sell as the big... moreBecause the small phone doesn't bring them as much profit as they hope for, that why there is less incentives for them to make it.

They are all for the money. They're not charity organizations. If the sales doesn't justify the cost, they will not continue that line of product. For them, sale number is everything.

You can scream how much you like small phone as you want. You're minority. And your existent on small phone means nothing to them. Your entire existence means nothing to them. Get real.

There will always be company who makes small phone as niche product, but don't expect them to be popular.

Your experience is not the only reality.

Sad to say I din get this in Malaysia back then.
I missed the old moto, Nokia, HTC, Siemens.... My early teens were flooded with designs and innovative.

Anonymous, 04 Jul 2021I agree with you, but i doubt any company want to make them... moreFor some reason, only people who like small phone are those who visit tech site frequently.
Most other people still prefer big phone.

Apple tries small phone with the mini, and sales didn't turn out well for them.

We all remember compact series from Sony, but it was never really popular.

I think Z series was a class apart, technically a lot different and a modular architecture, awesome. Yet Motorola discontinued such a high potential series. Anyways, they are becoming HTC

"crazy" ? hardly, it was an amazing design. like many other things in life people either choose simplicity over substance, or, choose the worst product, or cheap over the best. for its time, it was a great idea.
