A few years back you could get 8k phone around $300 street price. Things should be cheaper now. But more expensive.
The expensive part is circuitry to get more datarate (apart from filtering, which I don't need that much of), which they then can use for whatever sized frame. The frame size is not the difficult part, they could put in 20k if they could, and it would cost them little more at the same datarate. They basically give you 4k consumer grade datarates on many 8k phones. So, no it doesn't cost them that much to deliver 8k this way. You are just being ripped off, and saying, here, I'll give you my money.
The cost to put property 8k datarate in, would not be that much either. How much does codec circuitry take up on a chip. But, that is not the question here, that requires a new chipset to be designed for mass market, to keep cost similar to existing midrange chipset (if you put it in a mid range chipset).

Hmx tops out at 6k while Hm2 can do proper 8k.
Hm2 is only held back by Image signal processing present on mid range CPUs

Looks a bit .... The last one was nice, but needs 888+ version with 8k, and 6k 50fps. :(
At least if it's $200-$300 and you could put 8k on it, it would be acceptable.

It costs a lot to design and develop a new phone. I find the first generation much more appealing. I´m proud owner of the first Edge gen.
Still these ones look good, but let´s wait and see the specs and price

What I would like to see is OLED screens on the entire range.
The Edge family should be all OLED displays. I can understand IPS LCD displays for the G series but to premium devices is unacceptable-

Davy Jones, 23 Jul 2021Welcome to the new episode of another generic looking phoneYeah, not really surprising as many of them are designed and made by third party ODMs. Around 85% of Lenovo phones, 75% of Xiaomi phones and 50% of Oppo ones are designed and manufactured by third party ODMs rather than them designing the phones themselves. Since these same ODMs design and manufacture the phones for multiple companies it's not surprising that they end up being quite similar
