"Netflix uses variable bit rate so the bit rate dynamically varies depending upon the requirements of each frame."

This is nothing new, it's done everywhere, YT and all over the place. Even when you encode your own videos and specify a bitrate it's variable.

IpsDisplay, 12 Nov 2021Yeah I exaggerated , they have 70% global market share70% of known TV manufacture like Samsung and LG. If you want decent Android tv experience you need set top tv box like Xiaomi mi box, fire tv, Nvidia shield etc. There you will find lot of Soc from Amlogic, rockchip and others. So i doubt Mediatek has 70% marketshare there.

        Mediatek has 70% market share

Any decent processor without hardware decoding can easily play AV1, thanks to dav1d decoder developed by VLC. The 8 core custom AMD processor inside PS4 Pro can play it without breaking a sweat. Infact, most midrange smartphones SOCs from last 4-5 years can play it (they might end draining your battery though). The low end TV CPUs can't, that's why they need to have a fixed function decoder baked into the GPU to play it. Recent SOCs by Mediatek have the AV1 decoder, so they can play it efficiently.

So I just want to know if you have noticed av1 playback being smoother or more efficient.

If u are asking about how the Dim1200 is in general, I think it's fantastic (mostly bcoz I upgraded from a SD820 which was also really good considering it's only a quad-core, its just that it used to heat up pretty quickly).
But if u want to know anything else (i didnt understand the heating during youtube thing very well), let me know, cheers!

Netflix should be flexible with codecs, instead locking in users to single ones.

What are the good alternatives to Netflix in your country?

I'm surprised to see that the PS4 Pro can do AV1 considering it's mediocre CPU but somehow the PS4 doesn't do it.

prasad-gsma, 11 Nov 2021Incorrect. Exynos 2100 also supports AV1 decoding. Yes I double checked the 2100 does in fact have hardware AV1 codec

But it doesn't matter to me as I don't watch netlfix on my phone, but still goes to show that in some cases (other than price and node) MTK is better than SD
